I switched to the 1250 watt heater instead of the 1500 watt, cause the cord to the 1500 watt heater was getting warm and that heater draws a lot of power so you need a seperate breaker just for that heater. I made that mistake many many years ago, been there done that, ran the heater and pumps on same breaker and blew the breaker in night when it was really cold. Then the next morning when I woke up I had to get pond Heater working and then defrost the frozen hose's and get the pumps working again and water flowing.

Now I have a seperate breaker for the pond heater and I only use the 1500 watt when the temperate falls below minus 25 degrees

Lots of up and down today. Went to the gym at about noon and it was 37F. After my workout the Sun was out and it was 57F. Now it's cold again at 46F. Just woke up from a nap, the house thermostat was at 63F and was just shivering from it.

I sure don't understand this weather. Haro and Mitch, how in the world can you be that far apart in temps, and Mitch, what in the world is going on? Did you steal my weather??? I think you did!!! This evening, wind is blowing hard, from the south, so temps not going down too much. Evidently, tomorrow's high is at midnight tonight, then dropping all day. What's up with that???? Down to 15 tomorrow night, then up to 44 on Sunday. Come on, Mother Nature, get your S**T together for goodness sake. I think she must be on some heavy drugs. Maybe she's from one of those states that legalized marijuana, and has been "high" for the last month.
In our area, we now have more to worry about than the cold. Some major propane company sold out, and all their supplies are now no longer going to the midwest companies that usually buy from them! That is leaving the local companies scrambling for supplies. I have a contract for the projected gallons I would need for the year, I signed on at $1.59 last summer, and they contracted that much from their supplier. Now the supplier is unable to get any supplies, and they are having to go across the country, which is costing far more. Prices went up to $4.25, and by next week, well over $5 is predicted. My company is asking people to be patient, conserve as much as possible, use wood burners if you have them. People are buying electric heaters to supplement their heat, for goodness sake! Who woulda thought that would EVER happen!!! U have 350 gallons on my "contract", so I should be fine, but they are saying if they can't buy it as they contracted out, they will have to pass on the higher prices to their customers. It's not the local company's fault, but what can they do? It's really bad, drunks are coming in demanding their tank get filled because of their contract. The company told me if they filled all the contracts, they would be out of business and bankrupt by Monday. Sad sad sad ....

I have used the heaters before but this time I still have 2 large pumps running and the heaters are buried in ice. Figured it would trip the breaker. Once this weather breaks a little, I will go back to the low wattage heaters.

...That's pretty bad CE. Do you not have natural gas as an option in your area?

Gosh it was so nice and warm here today and in the 50's. Love it! Went for a bike ride up and down the streets near here. Can't go too far as I run out of energy and need to refill w/ some juice/water. Only one more day of this liquid diet. Will be 7 days and I'll be so glad to be able to eat solid food. This broth stuff isn't cutting it

My hubby told me yesterday that we can expect the price of propane to go higher and higher. They say it is cuz crude oil is going higher. Glad we have a wood stove but we do heat our water w/propane. Time to get an electric water heater if prices get too high. That would involve rewiring the garage for one and not cheap.

It has been on the news for days here about the propane shortage and that it is driving prices way up

Nope, I live in the country, so no gas lines whatsoever out this way. We have option of a propane tank and/or electric. Electric heaters are sold out in stores. It's like when there is a threat of bad storm, people go and buy up all the generators available. I cannot imagine people buying electric space heaters to supplement propane.
If I understand things correctly, there isn't a shortage of propane, just a shortage of where it's going. I think the "mother" company was sold to another company, and the buyer is not honoring contracts the original company had; thus, all those suppliers cannot fill their contracts, and therefore are not able to fill the contracts of the local propane companies. It's a vicious circle and all started with the sale of the main company. Maybe I'm wrong and didn't hear it right, but that's what I got from the news. Government seems to get their freaking nose into the gas issues, allows the gas companies to hike their prices over and over for no apparent reason, so I suspect we will get no help from the Government in this issue either. I have a contract for $1.58 a gallon, and right now the propane is over $5/gallon. They told me right now they cannot even partially fill tanks with contracts! I'm guessing they are only filling tanks if people are willing to pay the $5/gallon. In the past 9 years I've been with this company, maybe 1 or 2 years I could have saved a few bucks by not having a contract, but other years it has ALWAYS been to my advantage. This company I buy from is the type that would tell me, "We have fulfilled your contract, and if you can get to the next contract month, we're pretty sure we can lock in a lower price than what we are selling at right now. Watch your tank level, and keep us posted if you need fuel. Otherwise we will wait until next month to fill you under new contract." Of course, if they were wrong, and the prices went up, I would have to pay more, but they have always looked out for their customers. Not many companies can say this. I will do whatever necessary to help them out. No, I don't want to pay $5/gallon, but I also understand they will no longer be a local company if they are forced to honor all their contracts. Then what will all of us with contracts do? Suing them will not be an option, they will go bankrupt. Just praying this gets figured out and SOON! I looked, I'm down to 30%. That will last me quite a while (300 gallon tank), but not forever. Time will tell ...
