The fish are pretty tough and the cold never seems to bother my fish, but water is too cold for my hands too. Must wear rubber gloves when workin in ice cold water or my hands will be stiff and sore the next day.

Good to have extra air for big koi, I think lack of oxygen is reason most fish die off in winter, and aways the biggest fish will die first when they run low on oxygen. It is simple mathamatics, larger fish need more oxygen and bloody gills are a sign they sucked in too much deadly gases instead. I have seen this with other people's fish over the last 22 years. People forget too that the fish get bigger every summer and the pond stays the same size.

Poor Haro had really bad luck when the power went out and that was most likely the reason they ran out of air. I really feel bad for you Haro, don't give up just yet, hopefully the spring will come soon!!

My Haro, sorry to hear that you have been loosing your koi.
This is the first winter with my pond and I am checking on them frequently. Always worried when we have the extreme cold we have been getting. I would be really upset if
they didn't make it. We try our best but sometimes things happen that are out of our control. Mother nature has not been very nice this winter!

Pretty nice day here today. Lots of sunshine, temp up to 44F. The wind was blowing good so it was still pretty chilly. By Tuesday we will be back to single digit highs. :(

Fished out #9 this afternoon. Three left, probably dead and frozen to the ice. I left the de-icer on for about a week now, so the ice is off about 1/3 to 1/2 the pond. Weather's getting colder again, so I doubt it'll melt much more. :disappointed_anim:

That is terrible news Haro, but spring is coming :blueflower: and with it a new growing season. Little koi are cheap in some pet stores, I always get the little babies and watch them grow. One year a big bad blue heron came and ate lots of my smaller fish, so that year I went and rescued a bunch of feeder goldfish and a couple new lttle koi and the pond went on living with a few fresh new faces. :goldfish: :fish2: :goldfish: :fish: :goldfish: :fish2:

Sorry to hear Haro and sad to hear it is going to get colder there too .It got really warm here today 68 degrees and got the light finally hooked up under the front porch .Lowered my new lotus down farther into the pond and cleaned the pumps just in case .I netted some of the build up and poo out of the bottom of the pond .Took the doggies for a walk and made a scene ,people kept stopping and looking at 2 chihuahua's and a pit bull walking side by side .People looking at lots in the development

Darn it Haro I was hoping you were done w/ the dying fish. If they are all gone and you want more fish then I sure would just do the goldfish/Shubinkin kind next time around. Hope you don't decide to stop ponding.

Currently 3 degrees right now...yesterday the pond was wide open except for about a ft around the edges, as of now it has about a foot opening around the bubbler (thank goodness I cleaned out it's filter! cuz it's bubbling away) at least the sun is out for the most part and to think a few days ago it was in the 60's...argh come on spring
