Haro, why do you think it died?
I really don't know, Mitch. The fish was intact, the only thing I noticed on it was that there was blood along one gill cover. Thanks to all who commented on the loss. This will be my last attempt at keeping koi; maybe it just gets too darn cold here!? :cold: :grumble:

Well, I had to go add water to the pond tonight. It was -2F when I went down there. I was a bit worried when I went down there, the mega pump was sucking air. The ice had gotten thick enough that there wasn't enough water to flow into the skimmer box. The bog was still running because the pump is about 18" deep. I got the water back up to normal and gave in and put the 1500watt heater in. Hopefully it will only be on for a few days. We haven't had this deep of a freeze in over 20 years.

I don't really know what our weather was today as we spent it inside the stores shopping. I know it was cold running from door to door tho. Ended up breaking down at Costco and buying 2 new computers w/ Win 7 and 8 on them both. Guess they have a partition inside so you can go back and forth and use either one when you like. We have 90 days to decide whether we like them. Had to do something as figuring out how to install Linux or Ubuntu was becoming a real pain. Our XP puters will be dieing in Apr 2014 so had to do something. Where would I be if I couldn't come on here and bug all my fishy friends :biggrinangelA:

Weatherman is wrong again! Tonight's low was forecasted to be 19. It's currently 14.

Seems a lot of you are anxious for summer. Not me! Our summer is just like a terrible winter just opposite. Now it's too darn cold to go outside. During the worst of our summer it's too hot to go outside. Spent a month or three of 95 - 105> and you will quickly understand. Oh, our summer wind is just as hot. No such thing as cool breeze in north and west Texas.

Life goes on regardless. :)

We lived in Charleston SC for over four years and an air conditioner was a must have. I can still remember walking out of an air conditioned building and feeling like I just walked into an oven. Even tho it got hot I still preferred summer over winter. Now that we're back in Montana summer temps aren't so high but there are still quiet a few days during the summer that a/c would be nice. Now back to our current temp, currently 16F, bottom pond is 38.8 and pond is partially covered in a layer of thin ice.

Haro, Koi do very well in ice cold water, the trouble with Koi in winter is very simple. Koi require much more oxygen as they swim faster and are much larger than goldfish. I keep my ponds running all year, even under the ice, that way the bad gases escape with the running water and the pond is kept well oxygenated. Koi also need much more space to winter under the ice then goldfish. :)

a toasty 1 at home, currently, wind chill of -15 it usually gets colder as the sun comes up too, calling for 12 today We only got down to 50 here Pond nice and open still

I disliked the heat in phoenix, much happier with cold, not terrible cold but cold, you can always get warmer, can't cool down when it is 115 or 118. Maryland has been miserable hot humid hotter than normal summers. Heat hurts me, actually can not be out in it long at all. If it gets up into the 90's and humid, I get sick. So house locked down once it heats up.

Which computer did you get jw? if it came with win 8 upgrade it to win 8.1, free, they did a lot of fixing. It most likely is already upgraded. I like this win 8.1 , mine has the touch screen, took a little to learn the ins and outs, but comfy with it now. A real upgrade from win xp. Win 8 is made for touch, but you can make the desktop be back to basic desktop.

I hate extreme heat too, the hotter it gets the slower I move, although right now a hot blast would not be too bad. I see that Mitch stole my warm Chinook winds yesterday, hoping we can get a little warmer breeze here too, finally warming up now to 16 Fahrenheit, or minus 9 Celsius.

My thought of the day, The unusual colder weather patterns that we are seeing in the United States, and other parts of North America, is this because of global warming?

Then let's not forget the Antarctic expedition way down south, they were there at the Antarctic studying for global warming, remember, they got suck in the thick ice, and now several ice breaker rescue ships are now also stuck in the ice!

Not a rocket scientist here, but it is my guess that there is no need to look for global warming here,! Hahaha :)
