CE, the bubbler actually creates more ice as little fine mist's of bubbles are thown up, moisture collects above the hole, which freezes when cold, adding more ice sometimes.

If you place 1250 watt heater next to flowing water, that distributes the warm water evenly too. Bubbler just pushes water around and throws fine mist of water up, Which then freezes quick.

My ponds flow like à stream from pond to pond, and that is better to melt the ice . The flowing water erodes the ice quicker like flowing water over time, can cut à hole threw rock! Flowing water is very crossive over time, and flowing water gives rocks funny shapes, as down by river you can find rocks with strange shapes. River stone is also smooth and polished by flowing water, so imagine what flowing water can do to ice!

CE, if you had your two ponds connected by that stream, then you would have a set up similar to me, Which would Winter the ponds better and then one heater would heat both ponds. Plus you would have a larger body of water by connecting them both, which would Hold it's temperture better too!

It was so nice last night that I turned off the heater to my greenhouse!! But now all has changed!! It was starting to get cold this morning so I turned on the heater to the greenhouse before work, and after work this afternoon, it got so cold in the last six hours that the ponds developed thin ice and then we got light snow on top of that too! Now I feel like I have been shoved back into the deep freezer!

Right now it is currently 9 Fahrenheit and going down to minus 9 tonight!! (minus 23 Celsius tonight!) (Just now plugged the 1250 watt heater in again)

Here is what ponds look like right now.... (Yesterday it was all melted!)

Getting warmer here, then colder again, too. I see Canada and northern states going to get a bunch of snow in the next few days. Hoping we get only a bunch of rain here, fill my ponds up naturally, and help melt that ice.
OK, Haro finally got it through my thick skull! The air pump is sitting on the back deck, up off of the ground, so it is pulling air temp to go into the pond. Plus, like Colleen says, it's blowing cold air bubbles, which are making more ice. Geesh, how dumb can I be! At least now I understand the difference. I will have to get another pump going on the shelf, Colleen, to circulate the water in the koi pond, maybe use that instead of the air bubbler for winter. Will see if/when the ice thaws out. The goldfish pond is thawing nicely. And, just as a reminder, I have the stream going which is similar to your pond, Colleen, circulating water from skimmer to stream and back, and the bob is still running. The goldfish pond is completely running as usual, plus the water pump pushing water to the surface from only about 8" below the surface, to keep the hole. I'm hoping the warm temps headed this way stick around long enough, and the rain is warm enough to help melt the ice. We shall see. Thanks everyone for your help!
Now, here is a pic I took this MORNING, of the moon "setting" over the western sky! The colors are exactly as they were when I took the pic! Pale blue on the horizon, and lavender above that! OMG, I have never noticed or seen the moon setting in the morning with such a beautiful sky behind it. I must print this pic!

Who wants to trade weather with me??? Come on you guys down south, quit hogging the warm wind again!! Willing to trade weather with anyone EXCEPT Mitch!! I imagine he is enjoying a nice frosty -19 Fahrenheit right now, and probably holed up in wood cabin, surrounded by wild vicious beasts, and with ton of snow on roof, drinking hot coffee with lots of Crown Royal!! Ha ha ha ha

Right now I have plenty of cold for my liking at -6 Fahrenheit (-21 C)!

We are under a flood warning through Sunday. Geesh .... they are calling for 2-3" of rain! Can you imagine if that came down as snow? We would fit right in with you Canadians! But, alas, it is coming down as rain, and then melting the snow, and already saturated soil, it will run off. Bad part this time of year, usually the ground has some freeze in it, so the top soil will get washed away in the fields. It means a lot here in the country, with farmed fields around me, and very sad to see the precious top soil washing into the ditches. Wish more farmers would hold off tilling their soil until spring, but they are trying to get a jump on the spring planting season, I guess. Oh well, my ponds will surely be filled to overflowing by the time this rain pushes through! And, I may need to drain out some of the koi pond, so it doesn't overflow into the goldfish pond. Don't want any more sick fish. We shall see how this all pans out. 50's for today and tomorrow, heavy rain! I think I may be in Seattle! :cheerful:
