Get ready and get going fast at the first sign that things are coming at you and hope you have a way out if you wait too long.
I'm heading to Costco on my bicycle w/ hubby and will check in on you here when I get back in several hours. Colleen I would not want to be sleeping in your house tonight at 10pm and then have to leave. It could get really hairy waiting after dark to leave so please don't take any unnecessary chances. Sounds like you are on the alert and watching and waiting but take care and do the right things for your life's sake!

On the bright side, less then one block away is a very big hill! Me and the puppies will run there. I will put a leash on the two biggest Koi that have been with me for 21 years, and they can swim behind me! .... OK I admit, I may be losing it! But at least my blood pressure won't kill me!! :)

colleen, next time you are at the river, take a picture if you can. Just curious to see what you are dealing with. I haven't been in a position where my house was in danger but I did go thru a bad flood back in 1993 where the city water treatment plant was flooded and the whole town was with out water for about 3 weeks. The capital city of Iowa. Stay safe and keep us posted if you can, but think of your family first.

Like Colleen said, it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. It will be a few hours before the "wave" of water reaches her town. The worst is yet to come for her.

I guess you have room for a pack of gum then, jw? :)

Another news update! Now they say the crest will not happen till Monday! AND it has been DOWNGRADED!! I don't think they know for sure what is happening!!! I think they saw the bad pictures in Calgary and over reacted! The river is NOT even FLOODING right now!! The creek is small and you have to look hard to see it cause the grass is so long! The river is at a "high normal" but well within it's banks! (Not flooding yet either!) I know there is still a large volume of water comming and we will get a bad flood for some people, but I think I will be OK.

The way I see it, during the last big flood in 1995, the river was already very high and flooding, for two or three weeks, so there was no room left in the water basin ( 300km long) to hold any more water. The actual river basin last week was very low for this time of the year, so there was a lot of room for water displacement, to run off up stream, overflow in farmers fields and stuff, so that will displace alot of the actual volume of the flood water. Those of you with long streams know that if you dump a lot of water upstream, there will be flooding, but as the water goes further down the stream, the actual flood starts to "thin out". This is what I believe is happening.

There is still a bad flood predicted, but is sounds like it won't be as bad as 1995. I survived the flood of 1995 and the back yard did not get any water. I am going to work soon and carrying on with life as normal, enough of this stress, good news came and I am happy! :)

I did not know that about your river basin, Colleen. Why wouldn't the officials take that into account when they are issuing their warnings?

:chair:

Thank goodness for that!

I would advise that you still stay alert for any surprises.
Sounds like you may have dodged a bullet.

In Calgary I've heard one estimate that the damage is going to be in the hundreds of millions.
