Dave go ahead and feel free to use that cat brain anyway you like. I just found it on the internet somewhere.

Rebel it does look like pumpkin pie..........don't think I'll take a bite of it tho!

Info on the web about it:
Tree fungus Reishi, Ling zhi (Ganoderma lucidum) Fruiting bodies: January - December, annual
Area of infection: trunk / trunk base
Wood decomposition: white rot
Comment: White rot in the roots - and stump area - in the end the tree falls over. Noticeable through the stemmed fruiting bodies.
Recommendation: Tree should be evaluated.

Had an old piece of tree trunk with similar fungus. I'll find the photo and post.

just make sure you are not going to get any rain for awhile as it takes a long time to be absorbed and could wash into your pond

Trees can form burls which might be knocked off.
Fungus can cause wod to spault. Both produce prized wood.

I would post a few images but they can vary so much it is better to just google and look at the images.

Well HTH I had to look that one up and found out that spalting procedure can sure make some nice wood products. Thanks for posting that.

Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur under stressed tree conditions or even in living trees. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought after by woodworkers.

All fungus mushrooms that grow on trees are edible, as I have read this in survival books. However, they must be cooked to death cause all tree mushrooms are rock hard!!

I pick wild field mushrooms to eat when I can get the fresh button mushrooms that grow in the summer along a dirt road. These fresh mushrooms are best found were cows roam both sides of the dirt road, and their must be virgin uncut prairie as far as the eye can see. If they grow next to a wild sage brush, they taste even better. Once you have tasted wild mushrooms, it is hard to go back to store mushrooms. These button mushrooms that I sometimes pick can grow to the size of a large frying pan, and man are they ever good!! You must cut the stem to look for a worm hole, as often the wild mushrooms have little worms. if there is no worm hole in the stem, then there should be no worm.... but if there is a worm, not to worry, cause they won't kill you! Ha ha ha. :)

It only got up to mid 70's here, cloudy all day, but it waited until about 20 minutes to closing time for me to leave work before the skies opened up. Wow, did it pour. Someone said we are supposed to get 3" of rain in the next few days. Fields around me are flooded again, half of the field is underwater as I type. I checked rain gauge as the rain quit and have 1.4" so far. Ponds are full to overflowing. I always wonder, how can the ponds go to overflowing with 1.4", when they seemed to be 2" from top this morning? LOL Temps only getting up to mid 60's the next few days, and rain. Yuck. Tomorrow after work, going to movies with my friend whose husband died 2 months ago. They are giving away 255 free tickets for Iron Man movie including popcorn and a drink, you have to stand in line. We are going to get our armband, then go for a glass or wine or dinner ... or both, before the movie starts at 7. Should be a fun evening to catch up on chit chat!
