I always let some string algae stay for fish to eat but take some out also and add it to my compost heap for fertilizer .I don't want tons of it but a little is fine .To much and it breaks loose and clogs my pump .Cold here but they say 47 and so far saying rain but other report says snow so will see when it gets here .Can't stop it just deal with it .I put up a sign no snow but it either does not read or just ignores me .

Yep, they keep pushing back when the snow will get here but keep upping the amounts. I gave up trying to keep track. I filled up the jeep with gas tonight and made sure my ice scraper was in the jeep and my gloves. The drive to work will be normal, but coming home will suck and Friday morning will too. I should be used to it since I have lived in Iowa my whole life but I get a bit nervous each snow storm. I know my driving skills and what I'm comfortable with, it's the other drivers I worry about. There are a few spots on my drive that make me scared to meet another car on during a snow storm.
Totally agree with you, Ryan, about the other drivers. I can keep my vehicle on the road, but when you are getting "pushed" from behind, other drivers wanting to pass, it makes me nervous. I will NOT drive faster, though, even on the highways. If it's bad enough I need to slow down, so do they. I was once passed on a highway with the thickest pea soup fog I'd ever driven in. EVER! That guy took his life ... AND MINE ... in his own hands that day. It was so thick, I could not see the road to turn off on until I was on it. So, yeah, stupid drivers are what cause the accidents. I tend to drive the country roads in snow, since I can go slower than the highways, where some think you still should be doing 55, doesn't matter it's snowing and there are slick spots on the highway. Only the interstates get salt around here, other roads simply get plowed and rock on the hills. Otherwise, you're on your own! Stay safe everyone! It's sunny this morning. Sure doesn't look like it could get bad. Some schools in the area have already called off school, don't want to worry about getting the kids home this afternoon. I think that's crazy! The bad stuff is not supposed to get here now until at least 2, they could have gotten in a half day. My boss will leave work early, and she has a 4WD Jeep Commander. It's just an excuse to go home early. If her kids don't have school, I wonder if she will even come in. Haha

String algae is nothing to worry about this time of the year. I always get string algae in the winter, but by summer it gone. The fish eat it and in the warm months the very large pond sedges and other plants starve it all out.

Right now it is only 18 degrees and I never bothered to plug heater in last night as the ground is now warmer so the pond does not freeze over so fast. Supposed to get to above freezing this afternoon, and by Friday we will have spring like weather again!

Got to run, have to work a long shift today....

Man we sure are getting the Snow and huge balls sleet! Had to take care of animals out side after work and that stuff stung like crazy on the face! We have every bit of 4 inches on the ground right now.

Gosh you have more than me, ICSD. It snowed really hard, but just tiny pieces earlier, then changed over to sleet and freezing rain. I had to go out and feed horses their hay, and WOW, that wind blew the hay right out of the wheelbarrow. I sure hope no one was watching me literally running around the pasture trying to grab what looked like tumble weeds of hay. LOL I got it all, darn it! Then heard a rumble and good thing I was away from the hay feeder, as the roof decided to let go of the snow that had accumulated on it! Woosh! Horses ran, too. I guess they already knew about it, as they moved before the snow fell. My coat and coveralls were soaked, but like you said, the sleet hurt like heck on the face. Also had to grab about 70' of my 100' snow fence! I did NOT plan for any wind out of the east, so the fence is on the west side of the posts. Well, the zip ties were no match for the winds, and it ripped it off the right 3/4 of the posts. I decided for a quick fix, I would wrap it around the back, then the front of the remaining 2 posts, and tucked it back in on the back side. It seems to be staying put. It was getting dark, no time to find snips and then try to get it drug against the wind back to my garage. I just hope it's there in the morning, or it will be who knows where ... west of me.
Stay safe everyone! It's wicked out there. I left work 2 hours early, and sure glad I did! At the rate the sleet is coming down, I wonder about the roads in the morning, unless it warms up and rains and washes all the ice away ...

I hope you meant on quiet roads no one else is on, ICSD. Snow and ice is always fun to play around on in a truck, but the ditches are too deep where I live. One wrong move and you'll be stuck. If you have neighbors like me, just call a neighbor to come pull you out with his tractor, save the tow bill. I didn't put my truck in 4WD coming home from work, but will use it in the morning if the roads are worse, which I fully expect them to be. Yuck! I wish I was not so dedicated to my job. LOL

Good for you! Bet that was a blast. I don't think we got that much snow, but there were some drifts maybe 8" deep at most. The snow plow just went by my house. I looked and none of the local schools have been canceled, so I assume they are hoping the roads will be ok for the buses in the a.m. Local schools took the chance the weather would not arrive until 5, and when it hit at 3, time school lets out, bet those bus drivers were upset, and probably some parents! The roads were not good to be driving on, and bus drivers have to go down country roads, up and down hills, tight corners, etc. I wonder if any hit the ditch? I sure hope not! But, gotta give the local school credit for not jumping on the "OMG, it's going to be a bad storm tomorrow, let's call off school just in case" band wagon! Geesh, that's what other schools did, and they have already called off for tomorrow, too. Oh well, I would not want to drive a bus, so I would be begging for the officials to call off school, too. Me, on the other hand, will be heading in to the office in the a.m. I have 4WD truck, and will take all country roads if I think idiots are out on the highways. Interstates should be clear by a.m., as temps aren't supposed to get too cold tonight.

Well, the storm slowed down and we didn't see snow til about 2pm. I get off work at 2:30 daily but I took a load of firewood home so that made me a bit later. The roads weren't too bad til I got about 10 miles from home. It was like a brick wall of snow. I ran into so guy that was doing like 20 on the hwy. the snow plow even had to slow down. He was a hazard going that slow with his headlights off. I just wanted to ram a phone pole up his tail pipe and take away his keys lol. The jeep did great like usual. Love the all time 4wd. Gets around great and works like it should. I already told my boss that I will be in tomorrow but if I'm a few mins late, it's from the snow.

Starting to come down good now. Had a friend stop by and was here about 45 mins. His car had almost 2" of snow on it just from stopping by.

That is sooooo true! Come on, when they call for storms, they predict them more than 2 hours before they hit! And yet, the day before, the bread in the local grocery store was pretty much wiped out. I had to look, didn't need any, but had to look. Milk was fine, eggs were slim pickings too. LOL
People that drive that slow are a hazard even more so than too fast, sometimes. I try to go about 10-15 mph below speed limit, and seems everyone else on the interstate last night was doing the same thing ... except the semis. I know I should NOT have had my phone out taking a picture, but I never took my eyes off the road when I took both of these last night on my way home. I did it all by feel, had my phone where I could easily get to it. Semi passing me on interstate....

And, when I got off the interstate, this is what I drove on the rest of the way home. Only about 1" of snow then (maybe got a total of 2" before the ice started), but had great traction on my truck fairly new tires.

I had no traffic on my way home after getting off the interstate, which was great! I only went 40 mph or so on the blacktop, which is similar to a 2-lane highway. Met a few cars, but none came up behind me, so I just cruised slower. Schools locally were in all day, and I bet those bus drivers were cussing a blue streak, as the snow started at the exact time school began letting out. The buses were driving up and down hills in the country, going around tight curves, backing into driveways sometimes ... that would have sucked with all those kids and slick roads. no school today, though!
My Boston is too small to break through the ice on the snow, so she looked like she skated all the way across the yard. Poor thing. Mule thought the snow was just fine to roll in, though.

I think we got maybe couple tenths of ice on top of the snow, but temps are heading upward today, already up to 36 this morning.

Big wind storm here, not much rain yet but things are blowing all around. We have to go out in it at noon to the dentist. Hope the power does not go out there or half my teeth will be clean and the rest not so much!
