Why the schools ,most have metal detectors .prayers for all in Florida .Sunny out here and 55 degrees here
I know of no schools within 100 miles of where I live that have metal detectors. Yes, their security is up, but small schools don't have the money to have a metal detector at every door or even one, assuming ALL kids have to come through the same door to get into the school. In the end, the bad kids will figure it out and get around it. And, a kid coming in shooting is going right through a metal detector, doesn't matter if it sets off the alarm or not, he's in, and he's shooting. This kid was sick ... just like them all. Soooo sad!
Good news ... very warm here today, must have been high 50's and low 60's tomorrow, with rain! Had nice light rain overnight, which was perfect to push that pasture mix seed into the mud! Tomorrow rain most of the day, but my pond needs to be filled back up after getting dug out last fall. I'm thrilled, especially since we had almost no snow all winter, so ground water table must be somewhat low.
Happy Valentine's day everyone!

Oh and just because I am so thrilled to be a Grandma, here are my (now) North Dakota grandkids (they used to live in Utah until last month) ...

Metal detectors are no more than a deterrent, though when it comes down to it, everything is just a form of deterrents. In appropriate circumstances, they could be beneficial, but I agree that more often than not, metal detectors would be useless. My old high school didn't have metal detectors, but I do remember it being a discussion after a kid came in with a shotgun once. He never fired it. I don't think it was even loaded, thankfully. He had it tucked in his coat. Someone immediately saw it hanging out and told an officer (we had a police station in our high school). No idea what that kid was thinking. All it takes is one unstable person. After that, there was brief talk about adding metal detectors, but with 12+ entrances and 2,000 students, it wasn't a reasonable solution and never happened. Instead, they quickly set up new rules so students could no longer wear coats or bring backpacks with them from class to class. It made things extremely difficult, but at least it was a quick way to address a problem and helped to make people feel a little safer. I mean, when something bad happens, the obvious thing to do is address the problem and work to fix it as quickly as possible. At least do something, anything!

Armed vets guarding every school would be a better deterrent imho. If needed, I’d stand guard at any of my kids, step kids, nieces, nephews schools. But nope, schools are gun free zones, so can’t even have armed guards.
Headed home from Colorado, ended up stuck up here moving stuff from one semi to the other, then the one we drove up that’s supposed to go on to the destination while we drive the other home, alternator went out, probably cause the blown radiator hose clamp we had on the way out. So that’s fixed now. Now we can go home in time to see what the plumber says.

Killers go to gun-free zones. What easier way to kill a load of people than a gun-free zone! I have a family of hunters (at least my former husband and both of my kids). There was NEVER an issue about being safe with guns. You either were extremely safe, knew all the reasons why, or you were not allowed to hold a gun. Period! My son taught most of the neighbor kids safety with guns. Most of their dads handed them a gun, said "don't shoot your eye out" and walked away. Disgusting! When they came to our house for target practice or shooting clay thingies across the pond, my son was the one that finished their safety training. Oh, and my son was in the Army for 4 years, so a veteran as well. He is a model citizen (as is my daughter). They grew up in the country, and in this day and age, there simply is not enough "country" to raise all the troubled kids in this world.
58 this morning when I woke up! Guess the temps went up all night long. VERY warm and muggy ... love it! Spring feels like it's here, although tomorrow am going down to 32. Yep, 30 degree swing ... it's the end of winter, or getting close, so it's ok. Those spring peepers need to "peep", then we need to have ice on the puddles 3 more times before spring is here to stay.

My sons schools back in NJ before we left had metal detectors .Even his middle school and we lived in a good area but schools there decided to put them in as a safe guard .That was back before 2004 .,I remember going to the school meeting and how many of the people at town hall wanted to add them and that was back in 1999 when my son was in middle school .I just thought it was scary to even think a school needed metal detectors but hey it may help .The schools at that time were complaining more about kids bringing knives to school .Even if they meant no harm people did not like it and I was 1 of them .I know bulling even back then was being brought up at every school meeting to get it stopped

It was 70s yesterday, 30s now, supposedly it’ll be mid 40s later. Cold. Windy. And boss needs us to go drop a trailer, pick up another, move it, then switch trucks. Um, if we don’t get our well done, I’m going to get grumpy with him. He’s a good boss, just didn’t think of us needing to finish the well when he booked us for this.

It got up to 72 yesterday, I believe we hit a new high record, and now it's 37. Yuck!
@Addy, have a bee question for you! A friend of mine lives in the country, does NOT have bee hives, and she doesn't mention any neighbors that do either. However, yesterday, when it got very warm, honey bees were swarming her bird feeders! She has a tube that looks like a finch feeder, but with the openings for all birds. Those bees were going into the feeder, kicking out the food, looking for ... what? She said in short order, those bees had totally emptied the feeder, kicked all the seed out! Have you ever experienced this, and if so, what were they doing? Someone said they were foraging for food, since no sap in the trees yet or flowers or anything for them to feed from, but the weather said it should be available!
