The ice is finally gone (as of about a week ago) and I have restarted the pond once again (yesterday and today) because it is always filled with rotting earthworms in the bottom and it's disgusting and smells awful. Dumb invasive earthworms! At least no rotting mouse corpses this year! The top tier never needs cleaning like the bottom does.

Here’s my little container pond, aka pond in a pot. I just put in some duckweed and green cabomba Carolinia last week. The centerpiece is the blue iris versicolor I bought when I started this project last August. She was very happy all through fall and winter, so I hope her debut this summer will be colorful! Please, ignore the unsightly iridescent film on the surface of the water! I posted about it here a couple days ago and got some fantastic insight.

low water no rain and high humidity . spitters keeping up pond clean and aerated . Then we get race fans coming down the road to look at the houses here . I guess they see land prices are cheap and lots here are cheap and so are houses and since the camp grounds are on the other side of the highway they like to look

Iris seems happy and you can almost see the cabomba under the duckweed. I think the plants are slowly filtering that oil-like slick which is a relief. It could be harmless, but I want to be able to see the bottom of the container like last year. Still mulling over getting a snail or two but I’m so paranoid about getting an invasive species. Someone else suggested oysters, mussels, or clams which would be so adorable. But again, where to find a native species?

P.S. There was a tiny spider dangling from seemingly nowhere on my patio, so I transported it over to Iris. If it wants to leave, there are three points from Iris to get to the edge of the container. But I’d really love it it stays!
