When hiking I have to be the leader to clear the way of webs or hubby will do the "Wild t-shirt dance". I don't mind them at all and I find them so very interesting and gentle. They are not out to get us. They sometimes get in our way which can hurt them and they may fight back but they are only protecting themselves not hunting us down. Leave them alone and all will be peaceful or gently remove them from your premises.

I am howling with laughter! Yes, they DO hunt me down. If there's one in a room? It's near me, not you.
(I am taking notes of which GPF member will race over here to deal with them for me. Thanks in advance.)

We get too many black widows over here. I go out at night with a flashlight once a month and introduce them to my size 10.

Likely enough the instinctive reaction to spiders goes way back into our evolutionary past. One study that I recently read about, which examined innate fear reactions in babies, concluded that many innate fears probably developed a few million years ago. We can overcome the phobias, but it may take some doing!

I had an acute fear of spiders for most of my life, and still get a start if I see one on me. What's really funny is that my fear of spiders finally got sorted out completely by chance. I was once learning Talmud with my rabbi when I spotted a wolf spider making its way across the table on which we were studying. I started to say something, but the Rav also noticed it. Now, wolf spiders are large and have a painful bite, so I expected he'd use a broom or something and try to get it out the door. Instead, he took a piece of paper and put it down near the spider. "Here little sweetie, you just climb onboard and I'll take you some place safe! There you go, sweetie!" The spider climbed aboard and was escorted out the front door and into a flower pot.

Now, whenever I see a spider, I think "Well hello little sweetie!" and smile at the memory.
Even the mention of wolf spider causes my "innate fear" to kick in...Ugh, they are probably one of the last I would call "sweetie"....Are we talking about the same spider? Huge, Hairy, Fast, with a somewhat larger brain than most??? I do know that since they carry their babies on their backs that you should never kill them with blunt force which sends the little "sweeties" in all directions....I did enjoy your story though, just not helping with my phobia but glad it helped with yours:)

I am jealous of your lack of arachnophobia j.w...I wish I had the same reaction that I do with almost every other living thing. Six legs are my limit of tolerance!

Yep, that's a wolf spider all right! So you can imagine that my own reaction on seeing one about to climb onto a volume of Talmud in front of me was not exactly...er, comforting!

Hubby saved me yesterday a black spider was almost up my shirt to my face, when he said SPIDER! Shirt off in a instant!

When in Arizona I went out almost everynight with a flashlight and wiped them out. Nasty spiders. Then I planted a lot of eucalyptus tress, bushes. The widows disappeared. Found out they do not like the oils from the trees. Done with widows! The other spiders left them alone, but never put hands into a dark pile of anything. Brown recluse were abundant also.

Brown Recluse are my biggest fear...I thought when I lived up in the Adirondacks we were too far North for them until a friend of mine was bit in the hip unloading wood and the tissue damage was drastic...

They say the best thing to do, a dark area, uncover let light hit for around 30 minutes. Or light it up with a flood light. They do not like light.
I used to do that all of the time, uncover leave alone for at least a hour, then do whatever.
