We have 6 inches of ice covering almost the whole pond but the waterfall is still flowing strong and making a path through the ice. It’s currently 2 degrees with a -15 wind chill and it’s not going to be above freezing in the next 2 weeks. I might have to consider shutting the waterfall off at some point.
Waterfall and heater will keep your pond water running fresh all winter to keep water quality good. Check water levels under the ice and keep hose handy to top up. Going to -30 tonight here in Canada. My ponds run all year since 1991, covered now with plastic domes, as that makes it possible to heat my four connecting ponds much more efficient.

Have you calculated the cost of running that heater in the winter? Sounds very expensive.

Ponds are expensive and so are my 30 plus years old koi. So far this winter I only heat ponds very little as temperature was not too cold. I only heat ponds to when temperatures below minus 10 or -15 Celsius

Minus 30 Celsius right now. Very cold but my greenhouse warm and my koi ponds all running with big 1500 watt heater to keep ponds all warm under the plastic cold frames over ponds. 80 gallon Tropical fish pond out front warm with two fish tank heater's, under little plastic dome covered with lots of old blankets too. Going to be this cold all week...

I actually enjoy the non running water down time. The fish do fine, the plants do fine, I do fine lol
Even with the waterfalls running, winter is a 'down time' in the pond & garden. No fish to feed. Almost nothing in the skimmers to pull out. Plants are all dormant. I was longing to get out & do *something* in the yard so badly a week or so ago, I actually wandered around & picked individual leaves out of the pond that had blown in! :ROFLMAO: Before too long I guess Spring will really be on its way & I'll be busier than I'd like to be, but right now... I want to go play in the dirt!!!

lol I still have lots to do, fixing bee boxes, bush hogging the grasses, purging the garage, The pond really takes no time in the summer, except when the bog plants grow to much and I get a blockage leak. Building some new bird houses also.

I just bought a new pump for my pot edge fines filter as the old one's cover broke and the propeller is worn. The old pump still works but by the time I would have ordered the new parts it would have cost too much for an old pump. Oh but yes I will save that old pump as you never know!

Extreme wind chill values today, currently somewhere around -27 Celsius, but wind chills down to minus 55 Celsius, that's like minus 67 Fahrenheit!!!! Too cold and need to go out and check on everything in this frozen north. Even the water coming out of taps is ice cold, colder than my water cooler!!!
