I used to regularly fly fish for steelhead in the nearby Skykomish River. These fish come back from the Pacific Ocean to their native Puget Sound area tributaries to spawn where they hatched. Unlike salmon, wild steelhead trout don’t die after their initial spawn but return again to the ocean to feed and grow. Fewer return now than in years past.
This fish was kept in the water and gently released from a barbless hook. The bright fly it bit is known as the Skykomish Sunrise.
