I love the red mulch, too, HBL, but it's dyed, so it doesn't stay that color for longer than half a year. I like the accent affect it creates, but love my green grass, too. It mulches down into the ground, or simply blows away out here where nothing stops the wind LOL and then I put new down in the spring, so it looks nice and fresh again. I'm going to have problems with water trying to wash it over the edge stones but I think it should be ok unless get more than 2" in an hour, which is what was the test on Sat. :)

Hopefully, no more of those storms this year. That was a doozy that blew thru, we got it too. I got lucky with the mulch this year. First time I have ever gotten the dyed kind, but got the dark brown from our local landscape place, and it has held it's color all season, still looks good.:)

Interesting morning! I guess I'm going to be a Garden Spider G'ma! She laid an egg sac last night it looks like! Soooo excited! She seemed to be really slow this morning, probably used up a lot of energy laying the eggs and then encasing them, or maybe the case came first. Will have to look that up!

Then, caught a couple of hummingbird photos. At one point, there were 5 of them vying for the control of the feeder. Fun morning!!!

Rode horse by friend's house yesterday, and could not believe the size of his elephant ears. I remember years ago (probably 30 years ...) he talked about always having a contest to see who could grow the biggest elephant ears. Well, he obviously has the knack for doing it well! He also had some hardy banana trees (the bright lime green colored ones) growing down in his creek bottoms near where he has his huge garden plots, and deer plots. I asked him about them, and he said he mulched them really deep, about 18", then put plastic over it to keep it from getting really damp and staying wet. I could not believe the size of those banana trees! They must have been 12' tall, and a huge clump, maybe 5' in diameter.
Here are his elephant ears and palm trees.

He digs up the elephant ear bulbs every fall and says he stores them in peat moss in a cooler, under the crawl space under his house, where it's cool, dark, but doesn't freeze. I must go by and learn his other "secrets" for growing them so huge! I'm thinking of doing something like this out past the porch swing in that area! Or maybe against the south side of the waterfall wall to hide the blocks. Anyhow, thought you would enjoy his expertise!

Wow neat he has great looking plants. What does he do w/ his palms, can't see if they are in pots or not? He must take them in each winter too. My banana trees here fortunately don't need extra mulching. I do leave the old dead leaves lay over the top of them on the ground to cover the root area but sometimes they do die all the way to the ground but always have come back each Spring. Last year w/ our mild winter they did not die all the way back so really growing big now w/ our warm extended temps. I planted them in front of my computer room window and can't hardly see outside anymore.

Cutie puppies Sissy! The chocolate color is similar to Poppy's and Bear's coat. I always loved Elephant ears, many of them grow well in ponds. Too bad my season is too short here in Canada, just don't have lots of luck growing them that big outside here :(

Trying to keep up today with the high wind and blowing leaves.
