Hey that was cool sissy. Wonder if well water has any salt in it? Guess it depends on the well.I'll have to look ours up.

The deep well at the house I just moved into has so much salt i.e. calcium, you cannot drink it and only an expensive softener and RO system can clean it. It actually leaches out of the fittings on the plumbing. Seems when the drilled it, they hit about 10-12' of hard rock, the calcium from the lime stone fills the well. We are looking into drilling another well on another part of the property, this time they will stop when they hit the rock. Thankfully I still own the other house with good well water, I am hauling for all my livestock and fish tanks. Will be moving the pond in next couple months also.

We dropped of our dive tanks for a visual and hydro testing, yesterday. Heading for the sunshine state in a few weeks.
Mike, my brother, sister and I dove when we were in Cozemel a couple of weeks ago. Hope you get some good underwater pics. Would love to see what you find! Have fun, and enjoy the warmth! Hopefully your home weather will be much better when you get back home.

My well water is only slightly hard, but there is a water softener in the house, and I love that. My house water has salt in it, and I don't like to drink it (because of the water softener), but I love how no water spots on any of the water fixtures. I added an outside faucet that comes straight from my well before going into the softener. For some stupid reason, the previous owner had both outside faucets coming AFTER the softener. I didn't want to waste the salt, nor did I think softened water would be good for the fish. Turns out the well water is awesome, and I don't have to add anything to it or worry about chlorine. I'm extremely lucky as "city water" is in this area, but the previous owner did not opt for adding it, nor did the other two houses on this road, as we all have really good wells.
Sissy, that's neat, how that Pond guy named you personally and your question. I've never used activated carbon in my pond filter, but when I start up my pond, I just may get a big bag of it, if I can find any anywhere! Not sure I've ever seen it in any store besides the pet stores, and that's just in small bags, maybe as big as 5#. I'll have to do some searching to find it.
I put some beneficial bacteria in my koi pond on Sat., when it was 60 degrees, even though I know the water was too cold for it to work yet. I figured with the 3 days of warm temps, maybe it would get a start, but now back down to 40's. I have plenty left in the jug, and will use it once a week when the water temps gets up warmer. Since I pulled the cattails in the goldfish pond bog, those will not be sucking up nutrients this year, so will need to replace them with other plants. But, now I have a large area to fill in with what I want again!

I used to buy it from pet mountain ce because they sold the big bags of acurel activated charcoal cheap .I met this guy that I buy the 5 gallon buckets from now .Only request he has is that I return the buckets when they are empty .My pond water is at 58 degrees and bottom of pond was 62 degrees so it has really warmed up fast .I am still only feeding the fall food because of night temps.

Not feeding here yet Cause water still very cold but fish are eating algae and Horn wort now. Fish are all out and about dispite the cold rain and sleet weather we had the other day. The koi came out from hiding under the massive yellow flag the other day... not sure how they all fit under there cause now the fish look bigger.

Colleen, there were times during the dead of winter, when the koi pond thawed up completely, no ice, and I could not see a fish! I could see the bottom everywhere, but no fish. I panicked the first time this happened a year or two ago, but now I know they all go into the "garages" (upside down shelf units I use to put plants on) and hide. I only have 2 of them, and 25 koi, but they were all hiding in there. Maybe they stay warmer all huddled together, don't know. Or, maybe they just feel safer snuggled up with each other. :)

I guess my goldfish are sociable. I even put my hand in the water last weekend when the temps were in the 70's (water was cold, though) and Speck swam over just like she always does. Others were curious as well and came up to see what my hand was. I didn't move it, just let them investigate. I love that about the goldfish. Koi never seem to be that curious, though. Which is a good thing, as the more curious they are, the more likely they will get snatched by a predator. I wish cameras would l take good pics into the water. I guess if the koi come to the surface again, I should be able to get a good pic of them. Supposed to be sunny and much warmer again the next couple of days ... warmer than 50 that is.

hello everybody, hope you are all fine ! we are doing ok new baby orri is growing well and sleeping well !!, i had to pop on just to say that this is really the most friendly forum i have encountered, recently i have joined a few classical music forums and on everyone i am getting jumped on and criticized over my lack of education in classical music, even though i have already stated that i am just getting into classical, i mention new young modern classical composers and i get jumped on again cos they are not the old masters ! how do these forums keep new members ?? if the senior members criticize everything they write ?
