Got back from two weeks on the east coast, only to find that a damn heron has been hanging around here. The neighbour's girl chased him away once, but he definitely got the two goldfish out of the turtle pond (mosquito control) and probably about half of the fish from the pond. (Had about 40 or so.) Hard to tell exactly, since they won't even come out to feed. I had a net over the pond, about 5' up and hanging down around the edges, but I guess he figured out a way to get at the sides of the pond anyway.

Sad to hear john :( I've seen your set-up and you put so much work into it. To lose so many to a hungry bird like that, I bet you were heart broken.

Thank you for the kind remarks and your interest country escape. I decided to post these pics in this thread but I posted them 1 week after they hatched in their own thread so may just update that. I have NO fantail goldfish in the pond so the appearance of double tails is really exciting. I personify my self recreating some exotic breed. The thread is called Half my comet fry have fantails?

Well, the fish are slowly starting to come up for food again, and it looks like MOST of them are still there! :) I've lowered the net so the edges now come right to the ground, and placed a few rocks to hold them in place, and I haven't seen the blue marauder since Sunday, so maybe he's taken the hint. Apparently this bird isn't the brightest thing on two long gangly legs, as the neighbour tells me he (the heron) has been checking out his (the neighbour's) SWIMMING POOL!!

Good deal John, glad the dumbo didn't get as many as you thought. I hope he is foiled now by your net setup now.
