have you tried zoysia grass I have large areas of it growing in my yard .I bought the plugs and spread them out and they are taking over .I tried them 6 years ago to see what would happen .The only thing in winter they do turn brown .But it does not need water or fertilizer .I bought 600 plugs and now have 4 areas about the size of a 15x15 room and when you walk on it it is extremely cushy .I am going to buy more of them .I planned on buying them 2 years ago but seems like other things come first .It comes in what looks like a piece of sod and you plant cuts of it ,At first you water it after that just let it go

HTH i remember those things from my uncles farm but hate to say i liked the noise they made .It always reminded me of a push mower noise ,just loader .Addy hate to say but I take my time mowing my yard I find it is relaxing .
I enjoy mowing too, love the smell of the cut wild onions and grass. I cut around the buttercups, the daisies, watch for turtles, watch for rabbits. This time of year doing it slow is fine, still cool. In the summer I can only be outside until 9-10a and so much to do while it is cool enough. Then I speed mow. The last few summers have been horrible hot.

Sissy I have Bermuda grass out front, and Zoysia is a variety of Bermuda, Too invasive.

I
We need invasive here as the soil is not the best .Red clay and all that was on here was scrub pines .I have since fertilized with manure and lots of epsom salts and lime .Just to get any grass to grow .3 acres is a lot to try to work with when it is barren land .Builder before I bought lots had cleared every thing and I mean every thing .I bought 3 1 acre lots and that was it no road ,no well no septic tank and no trees .I have put back over 30 trees .The only part they left trees was the back section of my property where they did not take down the forest and part of that is owned buy a farmer behind me .He was scared when I bought that I would take the forest down and came to talk to me and I told him I was not touching it and not to worry .He did have some of his forested for more pasture land

Sissy have you had your soil tested to see what it needs to grow grass. We found a fertilizer source that is formulated for our region and the results are amazing. It seems I was wasting a lot of water trying to get it to green up with the old nation brand stuff.

My wife had planned that the trees in the yard would be in 3 foot wide rows with no grass. She had the rows tilled but never did anything with them. A year latter you could not tell where it was tilled.

I am not a fan of this grass at all, BUT, in conditions like Sissy's it isnt a bad choice. Very few grasses will take the heat as well, and it can obviously grow in clay/crappy soil conditions without added loam, and with very little watering after being established. HERE, it looks like drying straw/dead brown in the winter, which I think is ugly, but she may be just enough south to keep some color. Unlike some parts of the country, our water bills are not too bad so can afford to run irrigation... There's been a few times people installed this locally thinking it was a wonder grass, and paid us to remove it. As long as folks know what it is, and have the right conditions for it, it really isnt a bad product to have.

Yep and the suggested every thing and tried there's for 2 years and gave up and asked the farmer behind me who has cows and the farmer in front of me that has horses and what they suggested has worked .Most of the lawn around there houses are Zoysia and there pastures of course are pasture grass .Here they suggested kentucky 31 and another kind and they just would not grow .They also suggested all these grass fertilizers .I know from my dad about lime and epsom salts so used the manures from both farms and other grass seed and t is filling in alot along with the Zoysia

It browns up here in the middle of December and sometimes later and then starts to green up again the end of January ,as long as conditions are good that is .Here with wells drying up all over i would not want to waste that gold from the ground .I could not believe how fast it took off and kept the ground from washing away .I only put it on my slopping front yard .But figure in a couple of years I may be selling this place and moving on and down here people don't fuss over there lawns ,they just scalp mow them down to the dirt or let it grow up to there knees and then mow .

Koiguy- looks like an Ocean City, Md sculpture. There's a guy there that does a different one almost every day. Amazing to watch him work and no one seems to bother them when he is done
Sissy- we have zoysia grass. Very steep hill for a front yard and we had water seeping in the first couple of years. It has taken over even in full shade areas and the neighbors yard that is red clay and sand mix. Once t he night temps fall below 40 it turns to a beige carpet till spring.
Hubby and I worked all day putting in my 50 gal. preform in front using the raised bed method someone posted. Not to much digging so it should be finished tomorrow.
