We managed to catch the other dog and made the mistake of mentioning it to the rescue people.
All of a sudden we were bad people not fit to have our dog. Never mind that Sounder could have gotten Kess killed.
A lot of rescue people are just plain nuts. No way would I go near a rescue dog again. I want want one that hasn't been screwed up by the previous owner and do not want to deal with the flakes.
Now I realize animals need homes. So please no flames as I have already been burnt.
I truly hope you can someday give another rescue a chance. I am not defending the rescue nuts you dealt with, but asking that you see it from the other side. I was involved in rescue for many years. I did all angles from evaluating incoming dogs, pulling dogs from shelters, taking owner surrenders, fostered, home inspections, and sadly, the decision of when a dog could not be rehabilitated (either physically or behaviorally) and to PTS (put to sleep) ... Being a rescue volunteer is not for the faint of heart, you have to be able to make tough choices, and live with what you know you can not fix, not to mention the complete hatred you form for the humans that put some of these animals into the situation they were in. You see so much, and become jaded over time, which is why I got out. I kid you not, had i stayed in, I would have really hurt someone (the abusers) ... I was past the point of the "take the dog and run" stage (the being grateful for getting the dog) ...
Yes, what happend at your house was an accident, and we can all play the could have, would have, should have game, but you can not blame the dog for getting out. I am NOT flaming YOUR error (a spring on a gate can solve the problem you had), as I have had the same happen to me! After only 2 weeks, Sounder didnt know "the rules" and likely did not understand your home was now his home. Some rescue volunteers are more understanding then others. Dont judge the flake too harshly, as honestly, unless you have walked in their shoes long term, you have no idea of the world they/I experienced. Please tell me in what world you can go get a puppy, and have it 100% trained in just a couple of weeks. Hell, a lot of breeders dont even UNDERSTAND the importance of IMPRINTING and socializing their puppies, and that is a whole different catagory leading to problems ,,,, sigh....
