Scientist believe lobsters do not feel pain (no central nervous system or cerebral cortex to register stimuli) ... IF they did, it would be pretty cruel to think of these little guys freezing to death ... IF it makes you feel better to put them to sleep first, great, but for YOUR SAFETY, no more than an hour in the freezer. You do not want to cook lobsters that have been dead for a period of time (unless cleaned before freezing) ...

I dont know if 26 is a good price or not over there, at $34 US (converted the price), I couldnt imagine paying that kind of money, but we are lucky where we live (fishing is a big industry here), and we get all the lobster we can eat FREE through friends who work on lobster boats ...

hi capewind, the freezing suggestion came from the rspca (royal society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) website they suggest freezing for 2 hours prior to boiling, the price of the lobster was £25 per kilogram, that is $38 us dollars per kilo, i live in a fishing town also, but he said the price is high today as there are not many lobsters coming in apparently due to all the rain we have had and all the fresh water flowing into the coastal waters, he said he had put 70 lobster pots out and caught 2 lobsters and 1 crab !

I doubt your rspca would give advice that would put your health at risk, so if they say 2 hours, okay. It would make me a bit nervous, but it must still be within a safe window. I was raised to NEVER cook a dead lobster, and then they started saying you could put them to sleep in the freezer and after an hour, they would either be sound asleep or freshly deceased, and to then cook immediately.

We are still in good shape in our waters for lobster, fish on the other hand is a big issue. What was just a few hundred seals stopping in, has become thousands of them here year round ... seals eat fish, and now we have a great deal of sharks too, coming in for the seals ... The SEALS are protected ... Meanwhile, every year, more and more fishermen are going belly up:-(
