I actually think I was there once, about maybe 20 years ago, just on a temporary exercise when I was in the militia (SALH). If I remember right, we had a little winter exercise somewhere there, I remember freezing and huddled around a little heater, in a "5 man" arctic tent, with a hot cup of coffee one year. I think that was around CFB Cold Lake, it was a long time ago, and I was there only once.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh pretty Sadie. Bear and Poppy are so nice to have w/your Sadie gone. They are a part of her and Sadie is waiting to greet you all some day in Heaven as my good old Zekerdog will be for me.................gosh we do love our pet family members so much and that's why it hurts us so much when they leave. I bet they hurt just as much when one of us leaves them behind.....................I think I better stop before I start to cry. Ok...............thinking happy times, happy times the rain is stopping and all is good

I would bet the winter weather up there can be hard to deal with in terms of ponds. I don't even have a pond heater, as I am in the southern US and only use certain fish. I wrote an article on what I consider to be the perfect pond fish, probably be great in Canada also. Perfect pond fish: http://mgeorge1050.hubpages.com/hub/pondfish
I have tons of rosy reds in mine, although I rescued them from the feeder section in a local pet store. Don't mind the population explosion as I figure the bigger fish will sort it out as they grow, plus I got them to have schooling fish in the pond.

I saw a few rosy reds in my bottom pond yesterday. The ice has almost all melted now, except one corner still had ice stuck to edge, but should be gone hopefully today. The ice this year in the bottom pond was very thich, about one foot of ice in the shallow region of that pond. The upper connecting ponds, the ice never gets more than two or three inches deep. Fish all appear well and were starting to move around and out from under the big yellow flag yesterday. This winter was much colder than last year for sure, and had to heat pond for many many days, but hopefully the heater will not be needed anymore.

There is hope Colleen as we have sunshine today down here and maybe it will cruise up your way when it's done here. You are above freezing so things looking good and your fish are feeling the warming up also :)

Spring is almost here, the sun is shining bright, a little windy but who cares, it is above freezing and the ice is almost all gone except for the little edge that was frozen down a foot in the bottom pond. I have spotted the goldfish in the bottom pond and they are still down under the horn wort, where they have a winter hideout. Despite the cold winter we had, everybody appears to still be alive and well!
