Wow. Ice still 3 feet thick. I am going to stop complaining about my long crappy winter. ;)

Interesting thought about the aerator. My winter gets no where close to yours, but I thought the aerator helped keep the ice thinner on my pond. I know the ice melts much faster in the spring with it.

I am really interested in following your new pond build. When do you think you will start on it?
I think aerators are great for milder climates, but there must be a point where enough heat is removed from the earth that the temperature of the immediate area (below ground) drops below the freezing point.
The contractor will be here Monday and he’s ready to go as soon as the frost is out of the ground. Maybe 2 more weeks? Cross fingers?

100f in Alberta? Good grief. I get 100+ here but as they say, it's a dry heat. I've been in humidity but since I've lived in 'dry' heat most of my life, I'd be willing to trade that for some geographical area with green, including the humidity. Tired of seeing brown. Still have 16 and change before I can retire too :bored:

BTW, how deep is your pond?

Oh , sorry, that was my 100% humidity remark...
Never been to Nevada.
Not missing much. Dry, brown, hot. Although we do get snow in the winter, all four season and the pond has had a few inches of ice on it in the past. Nothing like 5 feet though. Still not very green here.

It was a very long cold winter here in Medicine Hat. Never had hardly any Chinook winds at all and there for a while we had extended periods of prolong extreme cold. I can't ever remember heating the pond for so many months. Calgary broke a record the other day, they finally reached 20 Celsius, although it took 6 months, and that was the longest period between last day it was 20 Celsius.
I have been talking with my friend at Animal World, about a week or so ago. He lives on the outskirts of town, and he still has ice too and has not seen his koi either... Now he is thinking about running his ponds like mine and wants to build a marsh to flow his big pond into....
I think your right about air pumps causing thinker ice....
Good luck with your new and exciting pond dig!! Minnows are very tough fish and they look good in large schools. I have a few minnows mixed in my goldfish population. I have the black minnows and the yellow minnows. Same breed, just different colors some times.

Mitch, I'm really excited to follow your new build ! I think the extra depth is a good idea, especially with the amount of ice you get. Tell us more about the dry creek from your roof's rain water , please. I adore @RobAmy 's stream and the amount of wildlife it serves and attracts.
