I don't think the heater is working, darn cold water no warmth.

So now going to buy a stock tank type heater, use when extreme cold coming.

So 300 gallon tank what size heater? I am thinking 750 watts .
This guy says 300 watts: https://helpusfish.com/50/heat-300-gallon-pond-heater.html
Maybe since yours is above ground it might need to be more watts like you said. You can always turn it off and on as you need it can't you?

Not to worry the inhabitants are all in hibernation mode kinda like a long exposure and someone walking through the shot quickly . it happened but they are in slow motion and probably never knew it happened. look at them trying to eat when the tem0 drops there a bit out of it

I found one of the fantails in the muck on a seat, only saw it because it flopped a bit. Grabbed it quick did a quick hold in hand swish in the water of the tank, it did swim away. After that Trish kept sweeping any water with the net I took my fingers and dug though the spilled kitty litter, muck etc looking for critters, snails, tads, fish. The hot tub seats were all full of muck.

I will be checking once the sun is up to hopefully not see any floaters.
Yikes. Such a bummer but hopefully everything will work out.
Thanks I sure did not want this! I did really enjoy the tub pond. The fish will have a nice pond sometime this summer, I have a ton of work to do to get the tub out, the tank re-emptied and moved. Then prepped for winter ie next winter. I am going to try and build up around the sides to insulate it. Also need to build up the downhill side, the pad is sloped away from the house.

Oh and I sure did piss off A LOT OF SPIDERS. Alive and living the nice life in their warmish winter holdings. I took the sides off the tub and spiders everywhere. Alive and running, nests everywhere. I had good gloves on, I do not like spiders touching this body.

you could build your own hot tub sorta speak you could take take another tub and depending on it's shape if you were to place a couple bricks at the bottom , place one tub inside the other sitting on the bricks you could then place some weight in the tub . get some spray foam in propane sized tanks and spray around the cap between the tubs. You could try it at tractor supply with two tubs see if it can even be done that way before you haul it home.

iF THE SHAPE doesn't work you could cut it into two or even four pieces , separate the pieces around the tub by how ever much you'd like and spray foam that.

Where you don't have structural need you could always use some azek and bend it to match the tub glue a few spacers to the tub that are thick enough to use as strips to screw into with trim head screws, wrap the 1/4" or 3/8" azek around that . wala home made
insulated hot tub.
one way to help hold the strips to the tub is to lay out the strips on the deck space them 16" apart then use a tie down strap lay it across the spaced strips and use roofing nails to nail through the strap into the spacers use the strap to pull the spacers into place around the tub using the ratchet.
wala secure spacers around the tub without screws or glues that could fail.

Good lord @addy1 - I was exhausted reading about all the work you had to do... then you had to bring up the SPIDERS! I'm not spider crazy, I can handle one now and then - but nests of them? NOOOOOOO THANK YOU!

And God Bless your neighbor - she's a saint to help you with what was surely a dirty, cold, mucky, muddy, and probably even a bit stinky job!

Oh my gosh - just now reading this. So sorry you had to deal with this! Wacky weather brings many surprises.
I was going to suggest getting a big aquarium and moving them until you could get the hot tub situation sorted out. But it sounds like you've got it under control!

These kinds of emergencies are bad enough when the weather is cooperative - add cold water and cold air temps and they're MISERABLE!

This weather is reminding me of the year we lost our pump plumbing in late December - frigid cold weather for days and then suddenly it warmed up into the 50s and I thought "I can get this taken care of while it's "warm" out!" Well, no - actually I could not. And I realized the air temp might be warm, but the water is still frigid and the ground is ice cold and the plumbing pieces are all frozen... we went from a sort of working pump to a not even connected pump. And then the polar vortex moved in and that was the end of that project until March!

For a temporary fix, a thick plastic tarp (or two) into the hot tub can hold water, though it would rest on your plants which won't like that approach. I am so sorry you and your fish are going through this. What a year you've had.

You can also put more in another container the garage if you got space. You wont have to worry about snakes there.

It was draining so fast, we did the first thing that came to mind a stock tank, then less temp change for the fish ie house temps then back outside. Also no place to put it, no filters so I would have prob spent as much for a temp house tank as I did for the stock tank.
What a year you've had.
It has been rough................. and dear hubby is having some serious issues. Keep trying to catch up on the yard, almost to the point of hiring a crew to come in groom down, control over grown bushes. Then once caught up, maybe can keep caught up. Now that the bees are gone and I have two working arms again. But my bush hog on my tractor will wipe down the wild fields of flowers, I can do chopping , good exercise lol, and hard to find good help!

We got all moved yesterday. So far the only floater is a snail.

Then my niece called as I was dropping slime covered clothes. They stop by on their way to or from PA, overnight, breaks up the drive to from GA. I told them they could stop, but eat before you get here, no food, no energy, done lol.

My neighbor is beyond good, one reason we paid for 1/2 of their entire kitchen redo. She will drop anything to help me out. It as cold, I was covered with stinky pond slime, kept her mostly away from it. My left wrist is still so weak I have to be real careful on how I use it.

The big pond and other ponds all have ice on them, the new tank pond ice free. The cover helped. I just took it off to let the sun warm the water. And I need to raise the hawthorne it is too deep now. and just started growing great. So back into that ice water to lift it out. Put in some sort of something to raise it up.

They nest well, that would work. Just need to buy another one, recruit neighbor to go with me to haul it home. SPRING time lol. No way doing now. Here is a pic of the tank and the dead tub. We just tossed things out on the ground need to pick it up. Will need to save as much water as possible and move everything again. Five other ponds are in the distance. The snake food ponds.

I will need to hire some help to move the tub, my tractor might be able to lift it, but not sure. Trish has nephews that love to make extra money. I am going to ask my fav dumpster guy if they haul out hot tubs in their dumpster. May need to chop it up.................

Sorry you had to go through that, especially this time of the year.

I have an almost 2000 gallon Intex pool for extra water lilies, or those needing a break from fish abuse. It's covered each winter with plastic over the pool itself and another layer of plastic on a frame over the whole pool. So far, so good, even when the temps dipped to 2 degrees recently. This is our 4th winter with it so it has done very well in this climate. I know of some folks who have had theirs set up for over 12 years and they are holding up well.

A bonus is that they can be found at very reasonable prices this time of year. A few years back I bought some for well under $100 each that had damaged boxes. Inside everything was brand new.

No space, the cars take up all the room. I am snake safe right now, March April they will be coming out.
