This is the time of year when the salmon run up the river to lay eggs. Our river doesn't have the appropriate habitat for that, so all salmon eggs are collected manually. They just began, so I'll probably go back in a few days or so, but I did get a few photos today. Back in Spring I gave a local morning talk show a "tip" about coming here. They go to different places every day to show it off; businesses, events, and stuff like that. Sure enough, they used my tip today and were pulling out of the parking lot just as I got there. I thought that was pretty cool.

You are the natural expert in your area JB. I bet you could tell them a lot more that they don't know. You get around a lot :)

Oh I am going to take my boys to our local river to watch them run! We used to do that every year but we stopped for some reason or another.

Went back to see the salmon today and there were a lot more than on Monday. I'll try to share as few photos as possible, but I always have a tough time deciding which photos are worth sharing.

The first photo is at the Steelhead facility. They have windows so you can see into the water in their holding tank. Its really a brilliant setup for education and entertainment.

Here are some shots showing all of the salmon in the river waiting to get into the facility. Photos do not do justice of how many there actually were.

This is the setup they use to deter the salmon (and trout) from going upstream. Like I said in the last post, the river doesn't have a suitable habitat, so they have to collect all the eggs manually.

These photos were taken upstream. Once the eggs are collected, they release them through a shoot that allows the salmon to continue upstream. I usually don't see too many up here though.

One of the most entertaining things today was watching a bunch of mallards play around in a small section of rapids. Sometimes they'd just go riding right down them, sometimes the current would spin them around. It was pretty funny!
