Today I visited the River Bend Nature Center. The place kind of went downhill for awhile but with new ownership its become a really nice place. They're even in the process of constructing a new pavilion donated to them. A lot of schools take field trips here because its one of the best places with easy access to small pond frogs where they can learn about tadpoles, minnows, and all sorts of creatures in the water.

Had a great today at an unfinished bike path. Its been gravel for years. Hopefully they eventually get enough to pave it. They've been working on a new section recently, which is a step in the right direction. The city has received awards on their effort to restore prairie land along a small river that used to be nothing more than a ditch, and their work has paid off. Its becoming nicer and nicer each year and they intend to slowly continue down to the county line.

I've struggled all year to catch and photograph snakes but I got lucky today and found this Plains Garter Snake sunning itself along the path.

I also saw a Wooly Bear Caterpillar.

Just as I was about to finish the path, I found something I've never come across before and never expected it in this area. This is a young Western Fox Snake.

I live in a part of Wisconsin that has the least diverse animal species in the state, so I don't often see many snake species other than Garter Snakes and Water Snakes. This was a great sign. It was young too, which means there is a definite population, and that population can now benefit off of the newly restored prairie.

The pattern and color is fantastic and I didn't even see it on the gravel path until I nearly stepped on it. They will rattle their tail like a rattlesnake to scare off predators, and they love to strike. I made sure to get a short video of it.

Today, I was also informed of a trail in the area that I never knew about, so I'm hoping to visit next week and will share photos if I find any cool sights.

You live in one beautiful place.
We have wilderness, but Maryland woods are so full of under growth you can't explore them. And population density here is unreal, I was so used to empty arizona.
But now that honey is retired we are going to start exploring more. We even went out and bought a small RV trailer, 21 foot, brand new (on sale since winter is coming) Our retirement is just starting, since the first year we had to recover from his medical surprise.

We hope to find places as pretty as the ones you are finding. Mr JB

Yes, unless I'm camping, every trail I visit is anywhere from a 2 to 20 minute drive from home. Its thanks to the internet. I browse the web to find local trails; trails I would've never known about. Sometimes I just scan google maps around town until I find something that looks like it might be a trail. Parks, pathways, bike trails, nature preserves, anything I can find. Most areas are small, but they have a lot of wildlife because there are so few other areas for wildlife to go.

You are really motivated and good job on discovering your own area. We need to do this too.

Went to a cool event today. A Chainsaw Carving festival at a local nature center. I twas pretty fun sitting in the woods watching them create works of art from a log. There were also a few fires going and they were serving apple cidar so the whole thing had a really nice fall-feel to it. While I was there I also took a trail and saw two deer. Not a bad day!

All carvings were auctioned and half of the proceeds go directly to the Nature Center. I didn't stick around for the auction, but I can only imagine what some of these pieces went for. One guy spent all day working on one carving, while others were finishing them every hour or so.

Search online for any place you can think of that would do something like this. I wouldn't have had any idea if I didn't stumble on it online by pure luck. Makes you wonder how many cool events could be happening in our areas that we never even know about. and the fact that it was free made it even better!
