Winter is finally over I think.... That Sure was the coldest longest winter I can remember... The fish are all alive and well today! Water is crystal clear and not much algae this year to complain about. I am starting to come alive as well and I have actually spotted other people here in Canada outside sneaking around working in their yards !

I fear winter is coming early this year so I am putting up the cold frames early and will be also covering with heavy plastic to further insulate,.
Last year I did not cover the top pond and it did get lots of ice so this year I will build a little frame to cover that top pond well. I just a quick tent over the top pond for now to stop the leaves and add some protection.

Your doing a good job of battening down the hatches Colleen! I'm sure your pond and fishies will be nice and cozy this Winter. Did you say you leave your bottom filters running in winter w/all the same media inside wrapped around the inner tube?

Yes I ran all my underwater filters and even the pressure filter last year too. It is risky running pressure filter but water was moving fast in that filter so it never froze.

Water Temperature is barely 50 degrees right now. I suspect we are in for a very cold winter this year so I will shut down little guppy pond and bring them all inside. I will also be putting heavy plastic over the leave net and hold down with rocks like previous years. Then I can pile snow all around edges to further insulate. It REALLY helps to keep ponds de-iced. Last year I never covered the top pond and it iced over almost completely. Running water in upper ponds keeps ice thin.
