they had a beautiful gray butterfly koi.........(not buying koi lol) and 6 dead fish. I look, but right now have enough shubies in our deck pond to fill the house tank to keep hubby happy over winter.

Addy, I totally agree with you. Our Walmart is the same way, no way I would ever buy a fish from them. We have a small but nice aquarium/pet store in Winchester, close to Costco. Local people run it, and their's are always nice, tanks are clean. I got mine from there, and haven't had any problems. No koi for me, just goldiies.

Thanks Addy for the compliments! I think I got really lucky with the babies. CE, I like the shubunkins a lot too and am going to try to keep the nice ones. I have never gone to Walmart to see their fish but have gotten really picky about where I buy fish and would never buy fish from a store that has floaters in their tanks. On another note... i have seen a big splash by my lily pads when I approach my pond. i have figured out there is a frog causing this. I haven't seen him yet but this is exciting news because i didn't think any of my tadpoles made it and have not seen any of them since they were the size of a piece of lead from a lead pencil if you could imagine anything living that small. I am thinking it is probably a green frog. Also I have been pondering about getting a filter for my second pump that doesn't have a filter, maybe the extra filtration will support more fish? I don't have room for a large filter and need to decide if I want to make one myself or just buy one. The pump I have is a laguna 900 gal/hr so i can probably have a decent filter hooked up to it. Another alternative is I could put a filter in the garage that is right next to the pond. I don't know if that would be an advantage or not.

Hope it is a green guy Keith, if you manage to get close or a picture check for the ridge that goes down both sides of the body, green frogs have a nice ridge, bull frogs don't

Go out at night with a bright light, they will freeze in the light.

Good news about possible frog, Keith! I had a dead frog belly up, bottom of my pond yesterday! Have no idea yet what killed him/her. It was one of the leopard frogs, laying there full body intact. Brought it up with a net, and noticed that both back feet were broken, somewhat chewed on, and one of the front feet was broken. Wonder if something caught it (one of my cats perhaps?) and played with it until it died, then was near the pond and it fell in? The koi swam by it many times, none of them picked at it or even acted interested in it. Very strange thing so wondering if anyone has any ideas on that death!

I posted about it last year ,I would sometimes take out 10 or twelve bodies and noticed they like to play with them until they are dead or won't move and then they loose interest in them

I wondered about that, Sissy. But, I have frogs on my pond, on the lilies or next to them just floating near the lilies, and have never seen the koi go after them. This would be a first. Found a bullfrog in the skimmer of the goldfish pond. Thought it sounded like it was running harder than normal, opened up the top and he was in there, had the leaf basket on an angle, causing the lip to not open all the way for the water to be sucked into it. He was happy to be let free from that prison, I'm sure.

CE, sorry about your frog and that's nice that your were able to free a frog. We had a bullfrog the last two years and he disappeared. I never found out what happened to him. Addy, I am hoping this one is from one of the green frog tadpoles. I had most of my tads in a separate container and they all died because of the mosquito spraying. There were only a few that went into the main pond. I thought they were all long gone. Sissy that's good to know about the bike trails if we go back. I'm not one for sitting in a car cooped up for long. I would much prefer to be walking ,biking, canoeing etc and breathing the fresh air than sitting in an air conditioned car listening to the radio. Our daughter and her boyfriend planned the excursion and they thought it would be nicer to drive the route.

The only frogs my koi go after is the ones that jump into the water ,I think they want to plat with them and just see movement and go after them or they see them as a threat .

I actually saw the frog today sitting next to the pond on a stone. I don't think it's a bullfrog but didn't see it really good before it jumped. I tried to take a picture but never got close enough. Sissy, It's hard to know what fish are thinking, but considering they usually follow their basic urges so maybe they were thinking.... frog legs?
