So I came home after work and couldn’t see a single fish in my pond. After looking for 10 minutes I might have seen one or two small goldfish but it was hard to tell. There was a big ripple of water in the front of the pond because I have never seen that. Also it looks like there was a lot of bird poop on the top shelf of my waterfall.

So what happened…. Some giant blue Herron scooped up all my fish! I didn’t think so because you don’t see them because we are so urban, but I was still kinda concerned. My bog pump disconnected from the flexible pipe and it was shooting out almost 4200 gph into the pond. All the bottom sediment got stirred up and the fish were pretty scared and stayed away. I ended up putting my old bog pump back because the nozzle for the newer pump is too big for my hose. I tried using duct tape but that didn’t hold. So here is a project for the future. Change my flexible pipe into something bigger and sturdier to connect to the 4200 GPF pump. Here is a pic of the happy campers today. It looks like some of the Koi are growing.

Oh you scared me.....I thought for a minute all your fish were gone !!! A good project would be to hook the new pump up to some appropriate sized sturdy PVC :). So glad all is well in your pond !

Thanks Tula. It was a little scary but they are all okay. When I saw the giant waves I was hoping that was the issue with a disconnected pump. Here is another couple pics I just took from ground level.

some ponders need nets over their pond to protect their fish; not you, you need a net over your pump to protect your fish!!!! :D

Is it my imagination, or are those Koi growing fast?
Thanks Cas so I think some of them are growing fast. It’s really hard to know when you see them every day so I went back in the thread for my pond and tried to see what size they were when I got them. Two of the Koi were jumbo tosais in the 12-14inch category that I got last year. One is a Shiro Utsuri with black and white coloring and the other is a Showa with red and black spots on a white background. Those have both grown a lot. The Showa looks to be 18-20 inches long and the Shiro Utsuri has a thick body and has grown quite a bit too. Looking at some old pics it was similar in size to some other Koi I had but has far surpassed them with growth. Two other Koi that have grown a lot are my gin rin Matsuba which is all metallic silver with no scales and another showa with large black and orange spots on a white body. I got these when they were only 5-6 inches so the have grown a lot. Also a few fish I got last year are doing well. There is an orange Shusui which is growing very fast and also a hi Utsuri is doing well. Probably only two are not growing that well. I have a really pretty red, black and white Showa which was the same size as other Koi I got at the same time and it’s growth has fallen behind. Also I got a Sanke longtail when it was about 14 inches and it seems to have gotten a little thicker but not much longer. I try to feed them at least 3 times a day but when I am home more like weekends I try to give them a little food every couple hours.

I thought some of them looked bigger. What are you going to do when they all get 2 feet long?? :)
I am always relieved to see that my three haven't grown. They are just the right size for the size pond I have. My 15 year old koi stopped growing about 5 years ago at 12". One of the 12 year old koi has slowly caught up to it at 12", but I don't know if it is done growing. The other 12 year old koi is maybe 10".

haha thanks for the concern. Do you really think they will get that large? Why do you think your Koi didn’t grow that much? If they do grow really large I have some contingency plans… one I have tons of room in my garage if I want to biggy size my filter. It’s currently a 4000 aquadyne but I can go to 8000 or 10000 if I can justify the expense. Also I never installed a skimmer, bottom drain, or uv light so those are all possibilities or add some of the fancy equipment I see on the pond tours. Last resort would be reduce bioload. Making the pond larger is not an option unless I want a divorce at the same time! Here are pics of my pump/filter area of the garage with room to expand and of the bog which is doing a nice job.

If one is already 20", I bet it will reach 2 foot. I am looking forward to following their progress.
Being prepared for more filtration is a good plan.

I guess my koi just don't have size in their genetics. I could say the cold winters stunted their growth, but you have as bad as winters as I do.

Yep I think I shoveled for two weeks straight this winter! It was the most snow were ever received. Also I don’t really start feeding much until my pond is cycled every year so I’m starting later than most people. So all the Koi I have were imported from Japan. I know they heavily cull their Koi fry so I’m guessing that might be the difference, but I have seen some very large domestic Koi on pond tours I have gone on so I’m sure there are other factors at play. Yes if the fish is almost 20 inches long and it grew by 6 inches in one year it’s very likely it will get to 2 ft!

My koi continued growing for much longer then I thought they would. I'm very happy, but perplexed, they didn't spawn this year.....wonder if that's a function of age?
