Hi Tula. So just wondering is your gravel pretty much to the top of your bog or is there a lot of water on the top? I eliminated my algae by topping off the bog with as much gravel as I could. Also there are a bunch of plants growing in mine too. It took about a year for everything to root so maybe your bog is still just too new!utting
Ha ha ! I'm honestly lucky we fit in the baby bog we have!!
I just planted some pickerel in the bog and and put anacharis and hornwort in net bags in the pond. I'm hoping the bags keep the koi from destroying them !
I've got a few supplies on order and am making floating planters and plant pockets this week, with a good variety of plants.....so I'm hoping all these new plants with help with the algae
I could probably add more gravel, it's settled a bit.Hi Tula. So just wondering is your gravel pretty much to the top of your bog or is there a lot of water on the top? Tula; cannas can do well in the bog. I had one for a couple of years but it does take up space and I decided to put it in the garden this year. Plant it about half under the gravel. I've successfully overwintered taro for a few years now; it tends to be a lot smaller and the color is less (mine is a black taro) but it makes it. I have it under lights and right now, they're about 2' tall. During the summer, the leaves get about 2' long and the plant hits 7' easily. I'm getting ready to put it out this week as we're getting a string of 70s and I'm not as worried about that last frost.I could probably add more gravel, it's settled a bit.
I see quite a few plants poking up now....thinking they may be water willow. The Forget Me Nots and Creeping Jenny are doing well all by themselves. I planted Pickerel in a basket into the bog last night, but you can't see the basket. The water cress I bought at my produce dept. and rooted is taking in the bog
I'm interested in others who describe how beautiful Cana lilies are in their bogs.....wonder if they plant them in pots or just stick into the gravel. I had taro last year, but of course it died over the winter.
Think I'll give it a tryCannas are beautiful in the bog - I love the big leaves and brightly colored flowers. @GBBUDD has me on the hunt for a Cleopatra variety - it's gorgeous! I just plant them right into the gravel - deep enough to hold them upright, but not so deep that the crown is underwater. One they settle in, they are easy growers!
What a great idea to use honey for gifts!Enjoy, it was a bucket of some darker honey than our normal real light. Never know what the bees decide to eat up.
Hi Tula. I gave them away last year during covid to be nice and it seemed like such a good idea I’m doing it again this year. So we had some friends over the other night. Someone mentioned to my wife that the plant (sedge) in the pond was so huge. What a great idea to use honey for gifts!
Like the strong suggestion! This morning I got a strong suggestion to cut it down.
