Nice fish @brokensword . My favorites are the last two.
Thanks Colleen. I’m thinking of getting some more pea gravel and filling my bog almost up to the top with stone so I can plant more bog plants. I think it will filter better. Lol no more Koi for me and my pond is not going to get any larger either!Looking awesome Keith! Nice koi too. I Glad everybody made it out over the winter pretty good. Now that your hooked on koi you will soon need a bigger pond as they grow so big!
Addy I don’t know how you do it. Minimal fish and a large pond so easy to care for...you are probably the smartest person here!Very nice!
Brokensword.. I love your pond and fish but maybe you need an intervention??@cas , but, but, that would mean I'm...I'm, I'm BORING! wouldn't it? I mean, we ALL have our lil traps and hazards, right? Can't a guy feel addicted without so much scrutiny???? Geez!
Thanks Gemma. That sounds nice about your new fish but maybe stop buying fish? Re Showas that lose their color ...I really feel for Showa, Sanke, and Utsuri the best quality fish are from Japan. I think if you had bought an imported Showa you would not have had that problem. I have read that out of a million fry they only end up keeping a few thousand fish so they are really picky. I could never be a breeder! I would hate culling the fish. So my go to source is Champion Koi. I really love their jumbos but have bought their 5-6 inch tosais for $100 also. I still get their emails about new fish a few times a week but don’t have the itch to buy any more. I’m probably overstocked already and it’s just a ticking time bomb until I have troubleThat's what happened to my Sanke, aside from two spots on one side, she lost all her beni and is on her way to become a Shiro Becco
and that's why I prefer metallic koi...would love a Showa, but no I'm not getting one.
Done that, it's not helping!View attachment 137941
I did too!
.. but then I found myself at a greenhouse looking for PLANTS, and that's where Lucifer had placed the koi in need of rehomingView attachment 137942View attachment 137943

I let nature takes it course, no feeding when spawning starts, actually minimal feeding all summer. I do net the pond due to the herons they fly over almost every day. They have a rockery to the west of us. I do loose some fish now and then, we have snakes and who knows what else snacking on them now and then.Addy I don’t know how you do it. Thanks Tula. I had such a major problem last year and have tried avoiding anything that might have caused an issue. I had a huge ammonia spike last year and I’m being super careful about over feeding. It’s hard sometimes when you have a new pump and filter knowing what to expect. I just found out two people in my tennis class have ponds! We are going to show off pictures next week! How is your pond doing?Keith, I'm so happy to hear how well your pond is doing
Well.....I seem to have bumper crop of gloriously green string algae! Aside from the algae, all is well, fish look wonderful, lots of toads and frogs. Water lilies have broken the surface and bog plants are popping up . My Forget Me Nots are blooming nowThanks Tula. Hi Tula that’s nice to hear. It looks we finally broke out of the 40’s and are expecting some warmer weather here. So last year I didn’t really have any string algae and I assumed my pond had cycled. Having a new biofilter I didn’t know exactly what was going on.. then with way too much spring feeding I had a huge ammonia spike and lost about a dozen fish. Fortunately the treatments I used worked and the rest recovered. This year I’m not taking any chances. I haven’t see much string algae but not taking for granted it’s really cycled. I’m going very slow with feeding and will not increase it until we get a few weeks of decent weather. So as an added note my wife really likes the bog as I have filled it higher with pea gravel. She is helping me with planting ideas for the bog and even went looking for plants for it today. We were outside this afternoon and a mourning dove took a little bath in our miniature “wetland” as we were gardening. I think I’m finally winning her over to liking my pond!Well.....I seem to have bumper crop of gloriously green string algae!
