Keith, honestly...you have to limit your numbers. If you want to get some jumbo tosai, for now it would be fine; however, you'll need to rehome some fish next year....either koi or goldfish.

One problem I had was my koi and goldfish bred and I had tons of hybrids! Hybrids are supposedly sterile, however they defiantly contributed to the bio load on the filters.

I have one very cool looking koi fry in this years batch. I'm tempted to break my rule of getting rid of every single fry and keep it for another year, so I understand your struggle :)

Seriously Keith if you don't stop you could have tragic, heartbreaking results in the future and I know that would make you very sad and us too. I like @addy1 's idea above

Is this what jumbo tosai grow up to be ? :p These fish are truly massive...notice the extreme filtration ad undercooking it takes to achieve these results.

I really enjoyed watching these video. You can skip through the first bit where the ma talks, to see these koi !

Thank you Addy. You are always the voice of reason! How do I get these fish sellers to stop sending me e-mails about recent arrivals? Actually I know how to cut them off but I don’t want to :)

Thanks Tula. I’m so happy with the colors of my Koi that the goldfish just don’t have the same interest to me anymore. I would give some of them away if I could catch them and if I knew they were going to a good home. I’m scared they will be live food for someone’s Gekko or end up in someone’s fishbowl and die of ammonia poisoning.
Do you really think I could add one more Jumbo Tosai? The Shiro Utsuri Jumbo Tosai I have is so nice. I would really love to get one more Jumbo. Sorry Addy!

Or build another pond and tell your wife to buy more shoes!
Lol. So my wife doesn’t seem to care how many fish I buy as long as I’m honest about it. It’s not a financial issue as I can afford a few more but I don’t want to have too large of a bioload. When I had my ammonia spike earlier in the year I lost about 15 fish. Four of them were Koi. I have bought 5 Koi since then but all the koi are growing so I’m guessing I’m close to the same bioload but with less fish. I don’t think I will have the same issue again as it was a new pump and filter and I didn’t have enough experience with them to know what to do. Previously I had only lost a total of one or two fish over the last 5 years so usually things are pretty good. Also I have a bog now so I think that might help. Also what kicked off the disease was removing my large sedge. I know not to do something like that again and let all the bacteria fall in the pond. The fish started dieing off almost immediately after I removed it so I’m not 100% sure if it was that or just high ammonia. Either way I know to watch everything from now on.

Thanks JW. I know I have to stop buying fish at some point. I think with covid we are all sitting home spending more time on the computer than usual. I know I am and thats why I keep thinking about buying more fish. I probably need a new hobby or start focusing on one of my old ones! I am a chess expert so I could go back to studying chess and try to become a master. Just to show how sick I am I actually looked up Koi prices in Japan and tried to figure out if it would make a solid business plan to import them to Chicago. It seems like the biggest dealers are on the west coast which makes sense because it’s a shorter trip for the fish to make it there. I really liked going to Japan last year and would love to expand my hobby into an interesting business!

Hi Tula. So the owner is buying the fish at around 28 inches and growing them to over 35 inches. That’s incredibly large. How large are your fish? I’m guessing whether mine are jumbo or not I won’t have many hit even 20 inches. I’m just not that serious of a pondkeeper and I leave for long stretches of the day for something called “ work”! I did buy some of the fish food you recommended from Amazon today. I looked up the place you recommended but the shipping was very expensive to buy it direct. I ordered the same food through Amazon and because I’m a Prime member they are shipping it for free!

Look at it this way you "owe" the koi you bought a chance at a good life. You are possibly removing that good life by buying more to be put in a pond that may or may not be able to handle them.

You have some pretty nice koi right now, Keith. My suggestion is to wait until next spring. See if all your fish survive the winter and spring start up. Those times are usually the most dangerous for an over stocked pond. And if you can wait until next spring, maybe you can wait.... period... ;)

Oh, and I want to add that I was watching a thread a couple years ago of someone going to Japan and buying fish. Loved to watch the process. Then he started selling some small ones at prices I could afford. I came sooooo close to buying one. I had to stop watching because it was too tempting.

Because Spring is a tricky time of year for fish, I lower my pond water and catch the babies in Sept.......leaving Spring as a time to restart things gradually.

If you have your heart set on another jumbo tosai, If I were you, I'd lower the pond water and catch many goldfish to rehome before cold weather comes. I plan in advance where mine are going.....some years I've been lucky to give them to friends with ponds and other years I release them in a natural pond on the grounds of one of our favorite plant nurseries......with their permission of course. This is a large pond, filled with lotus, lilies, turtle, frogs and a variety of fish.....I know they may become a meal for a predator, but at least they have a chance.

Lots of serious koi keepers get new fish, but they are constantly rehoming their stock.....I personally am too emotionally attached to mine. I don't know how big mine are....somewhere between 2-3 feet. Three of mine are just "pond mutts" from the fish hatchery and one is from a breeder.

I've seen that food on Amazon for less too, however Tom told me theirs is specially formulated......whatever, I'm sure they're basically the same thing. Ayway, I've been buying from him for years now....BTW I buy the medium sized pellets. I've used large pellets also, but they seem to prefer the medium sized ones.

PSKoi is located outside of Indianapolis, having relocated from California due to the high cost of doing business there. I believe he flies his koi into O'Hara .

Another option would be to re-home some fish now and dream all winter of a new tosai for next year:)

Hmmm... Sounds like good advice! I get all the newsletters from Kodama Koi too so quite a bit of e-mail. I think everyone has convinced me to stop buying more Koi at least for now... so happy for the intervention!!
