Ok I figured they have plants all over, great to hear! And I'm not surprised about the inspectors in Chicago. As for the customers they probably have high expectations and no idea all the red tape involved. Tmann my wife loves that show. If you don't watch it you would probably also like "love it or list it"

I've seen that show, too. It reminds me of the other show where they totally demolish a house and then rebuild a new one while the family is on vacation! That's just not real life. But, it is fun to watch. ;-)

Thanks Addy, She has visited about 1/2 dozen cities in Spain, and also gone to Morocco and the Netherlands so far while she has been there. Also she is going to France after the semester ends. We have encouraged her to spend her money and do as much as possible because it is a chance of a lifetime to see so much of Europe while she is there. Also the trips are all very economical because she is staying at youth hostels and getting around the country with ride shares. She is on the deans list at the engineering department at U of I so she really deserves this with all the hard work she has put in. Thanks JW but I am so busy at work I am dreading leaving. I am sure I will look back and say it was a fantastic thing to do but I am planning on putting in 12 plus hour days for the next several weeks before I leave to stay up with everything. Herz, I have 4 inspections on a house on Thursday and the owners are planning on moving in the same day so we will see how it goes! Those shows can be fun to watch but because I do it everyday its not really something I watch to forget about work. CE, If it wasn't tv it could never happen. All the subs I work with want to be the last one on the job so their work doesn't get messed up and everyone generally hates working when there are other subs there because it slows them down. I saw my fish through the ice yesterday and they were moving around quite a bit, maybe the sunlight is making them active? We are expecting at least 50 degrees this weekend so hopefully the ice will be gone for good after that until next fall/winter!!

Agree with you, Keith. My former husband is a contractor. And, we are not in the big city, and often he is building in the country and no inspections are even required! But, when he builds in town, everything slows wayyyy down. Everyone thinks that all the subs should be able to work at the same time, but you sure can't have flooring guy putting down new tile when you have plumber that needs to finish his pipes to the sink, dishwasher and fridge in that same room. Just doesn't work. It takes skill to work out the days when as many as possible can be on the job together. You are real life, the shows are simply "dream" life.

Those shows are full of it.

There's no way that those renos can be done for the prices quoted. I think someone must be donating portions of the materials costs for the adverts.

I like the show renovation realities on DIY, I can't believe what some of these people do. Some of the people on there are complete idiots and have no sense what so ever to under take any sort of renovation. It would really make me scrutinize buying a used house these days, you just don't know what the previous owners did or didn't do to the house if a reno was done.

Thanks Addy, We really lucked out with her mainly because she is such a nice person. I wish I had my head on my shoulders at her age the way she does. It's hard to believe someone like her grew up in our household!! CE you are so right. We were working on a project on a very tight time table and the owner sent an e-mail to the bank that was funding the project that we needed to get more "guys" on the project. The person from the bank and I had a good chuckle that we should send in the painters before the drywall was put in :)

Laughing Keith, sounds like a typical owner........they are not always on top of things. My hubby and I can sometimes not believe how many people lack common knowledge on how to fix the most simple of things. Without that knowledge they have no clue on how long fixing something can take.

Yipeeeeee, the ice melted over the weekend and I got to clean some leaves out of the pond. Today it hit high 60's and the fish got a little more active. I'm sure the water is at least 20 degrees colder than the air temps because overall its been really cold this spring. I counted at least 25 or 26 and I know a few were lurking in the bottom so it looks like all most all of them made it through the winter. So far they all looked pretty healthy. A bunch of them were swimming by the top so I got a good look at them.

I remember watching one show where the guy cut drywall on sawhorses with a circular saw.
I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

I rewired an investment property that I got last year. I found that almost every light fixture in the house.........the wires were connected with masking tape.

Morewater, my house was messed around in by amateurs. The basement was being finished by the previous owner. I have no idea if he did it or someone that thought he was an electrician. Sooo glad I had inspection, because the inspector said, "Well, that ceiling light fixture is a plug in unit, they removed the plug and wired it in. That doesn't pass." And other ceiling lights were like that. Also, I have to turn on the light switch at the top of the stairs for most of the outlets downstairs to work. VERY shabby. If I ever finish basement, it will first be rewired the RIGHT way.
