That's what I had in my ponds before and did on this one. The water backed up during one of the Hurricane's or tropical storms and the fish figured out how to swim right over the rocks. There is a lower drainage between my neighbor and I but when we get a really hard long down pour the back yards back up for a short period of time. If you have a place set up for the overflow, LA. Irises love that area and will thrive all year in a area that keeps their roots moist. I've heard of them making it through hard winters and never even die back. These also act as a netting and keep the fish from going any further. I have on large group of yellow La. irises behind my smaller pond where my drain is located. I weed eat completely down late in early fall and it's back close to full growth by the first of winter. Great area for small lizards and frogs.

I have mine overflowing into a pea gravel dry rock bed that leads to my corn garden, well corn garden once I plant it. It is still too cold for it.

I've been doing some calculations today on the capacity of the new main pond. The first 1' layer comes up to about 700 gallons. The second layer is around 300 gallons. Once I start digging the third layer, I can get a measurement on its size.

In comparison, the plastic liner the koi grew up in had a total capacity of 165 gallons.

Today we spent a lot of time loading the extra dirt into a pickup to take to my sister's house. Now I have room to dump loads of dirt again, so I can get back to digging. I also did a bit of trim work, smoothing out the shape of the first layer, and am nearly finished connecting the main pond to the river (just have to pull back the liner about a foot so I can smooth out the transition point). It looks like the river water height is about 3" above the ground-level around the main pond, so I need to raise the banks by a couple inches so my edging rocks sit in the right place. If only I knew of a place where I could get some excess dirt to build up the ground level...

Add another 50 gallons for the bottom layer. I've been digging like crazy today and finished digging the whole thing out. The bottom turned out a bit smaller than I planned, with the trench only being about 1' wide by 8' long, but I reached my target 3' depth, so the fish should have a nice cozy spot for next Winter.

j.w. - here's a quick pic of the bucket filter I'm trying to set up. Both pipes come out the bottom, then the idea is to have a couple of half-dome screens inside - the first for leaves and large items, the second as a fine scrubber to catch dirt. The inlet pipe would rise to the top of the bucket, and push the water back down through to the outlet pipe at the bottom.

If its not raining, and I have the energy tomorrow, I'll get the pits dug for the 55-gal barrels to sit in, and start working on the last part of the trench for the water pipes. The liner for the big pond was delivered on Saturday, so then I just need to pick up the bricks for building the waterfall. At this rate, I might be able to start filling the pond by this weekend.

Marla - its not Winter here  Actually been an extremely mild season. Our ground freeze broke by the beginning of March this year, and the cooler temperatures are very welcome when doing this much labor.

Pond Boy - Yeah I've been putting in a crazy amount of time to get this done, but its worth it! I thought about cutting the plant shelves a little narrower, but decided I really wanted the space for the plants, and the larger fish will still have plenty of room to swim around. I'm not sure how the pre-filter is going to work out, but it's a work in progress, and its something that can be finished up later after the pond is running.

We had some overnight rain, so things were a bit muddy this morning. but dried up enough this afternoon that I was able to dig the pits for the 55-gal barrels. Surprisingly there is some slack in the cable TV coax which is running directly under the barrels, so even if I set the barrels directly on top of the coax and they settle down some, it won't put any strain on the coax.

I also picked up the first load of sandstone for my waterfall today. Should be entertaining to see how it stacks up (something I've never done before), but I have a nice pile of clay to use to build the base for it. So the only thing left to dig now is the trench for the water pipes. Going to try and do that tomorrow, but my body is screaming from all the abuse, so we'll see how it goes. :(

Ok I know it's not winter:lol:, I looked at the date of the start of the thread and then there was one I thought was Feb. where you started digging, but maybe I looked wrong....don't think I could have dug yet here even in the begining of March.
Still you have made very good progress.

Pre ,bio filters all take some tweaking from system to system you will get it down. I guess my only concern would clogging up to fast thus over flowing mebbe put some filter pad \ batting before the screens.

Koiguy - I'm hurrying as fast as I can!!! We're planning on pulling the liner into place on Monday and building the waterfall on Tuesday. If all goes well, I'll start filling the big pond Tuesday or Wednesday, and have the whole thing cycling by the next day.

Pond Boy - Since the bucket lids seem to leak a little anyway, I was considering actually hanging the buckets inside the 55-gal barrels. This completely negates any water loss due to leakage, plus I can add an overflow so if the pre-filter gets clogged up, the water simply runs out the top, into the barrel. There'd be no filtration, but the water keeps moving without putting undue stress on the pumps.

Hard day of shoveling trenches, but all the major shoveling is finally done! The first water pipe is completely run up to one of the 55-gal barrels, and I'll be buying a couple more pieces of pipe to finish the last water line tomorrow. I basically have a shelf along the back fence about 30" wide, which then drops straight down into the 3' hole. I'll be glad when the pond is full of water and applying pressure against that wall, because it's raining outside again tonight, and I'd really hate to see the whole thing collapse.

Once I finished gluing the first pipe, it was obvious it wanted to lay a little different through the bends than what I expected. I don't want to stress the glue joints by forcing the pipe into position, so I'll just adjust the walls of the trench a little and let the pipe lay where it wants. This length of pipe had to go under another sprinkler line, plus my cable TV line, but there's plenty of room for everything, and I'm putting these pipes a full 12" down, which should help avoid freezing.

My poor yard... The grass is trying to green up, and I keep trampling it down, and creating more piles of dirt everywhere. It's going to take some serious work to get everything cleaned up again. Here's a shot showing the small pond, river, and the big pond in the background. My quasi-bog area is directly behind the barrel, where the big pond flows into the river.

And finally - after I glued the first pipe together, I wanted to test the joints, so I used the gutter-drain pipe I originally tested, plus some other pieces, and routed the line all the way back to the river. The water is being pumped through nearly 60 feet of pipe for this test, and there doesn't seem to be any problem at all with the flow.

Well, that's it for today. With all the major digging done now, the next couple day's work will seem like a vacation! :D
