sissy - the little fish will naturally want to be in the big pond when they get big enough to swim upstream. I'm going to be arranging rocks and plants at the head of the river to ensure nothing bigger than about 6" is able to go downstream into the river. Only baby fish are allowed in the little pond.

So far so good... the original goldfish was looking healthy this morning, so I moved a couple more 3" fish, plus this 5" today. I think I'll just keep moving a few each day and keep an eye on everyone.

That's great and it's good that you are taking it slow on adding fish. Hope Mr Heron isn't watching your pond and stream :)

The advantage of having huge trees in the neighborhood... much harder to see the fish from the air!

An amazing discovery today... got most of the smaller fish moved into the new pond now, and found one of our crayfish (we moved two from an aquarium last Summer because they are devastating to a planted tank!) ... these guys were about 3" long last we saw, and now this guy is a good 6" in length. Apparently he's been sharing the area underneath the big plant with the goldfish this Winter. I'll have to keep an eye on him though, as I found 4 dead goldfish in the old pond. This type has really small pinchers so he's not quite as threatening to the fish, but even still... Once the big pond is finished, I'll get him (and the second one if I find it) moved up there where they can't do as much damage.

I've finished moving all of the fish from the old small pond to the new small pond, plus three of the 5" fish from the larger pond. I now have a total of 9 rosy minnows and 12 goldfish (varying from 1" to 5").

The water temp took a jump today, its up to 64 degrees now, and the fish are getting comfortable with their new home, so they've been out playing. I was just watching them for a couple hours. You'd see one or two head upstream, then zip back down. Sometimes a small group would go exploring, and sometimes over half the fish would head up at once in a big school. They obviously love the movement of the river, so I'm very excited to see that there will be a lot of activity in the river once everything is done.

I'd love to get started on landscaping - I want to see the moneywort trailing in the river - but there's still so much to do before I even consider that. My main concern right now is that the river banks need to be built up another couple inches to match the banks of the small pond, so I'll be working on that tomorrow or Monday. Once its all leveled out, the next step is pulling the plastic liners out of the ground, getting a temporary home set up for the big fish, and then I can start digging out the main pond. The way things are going, I'm hoping to have water in it before the end of the month.

Wow I have some very unhappy koi. They got moved into the little pond shell on the patio today, and have already had two of the three jump out. I was nearby when it happened, so got them right back in, but I've been trying to stack boards and rocks over the top to keep them in.

Looks like another day's work to finish taking out the other pond shell and dig up the salvageable plants around the edge, and they're saying rain again on Wednesday, so it might be the end of the week before I can actually start digging the new pond.

Sure hope the koi learn to behave quickly, they have to stay in their new home for the next few weeks. I've moved all the other fish into the new pond, except these three koi, so I can't really do anything else to give them more room.

Oh, I almost forgot... My bullfrog came out of hibernation today! I was standing there trying to decide where to start with tearing out the old pond, and just happened to notice that e was sitting there right beside my feet. glad I didn't step on him!

Erg... one of my 6" goldfish jumped out of the river while we were eating dinner. First jumper I've had in the new water. He wasn't flopping anymore when I found him, but he did start swimming again right away once back in the water. Nothing to do but wait and see if he survives the night. I put up some wood around the edges where the water is getting churned from the pumps, I've been wondering about that area anyway. Will be glad when I have a chance to get the large rocks to line the edges.

Well the fish survived without any obvious ill affects, and was back swimming with the others today. *whew* The koi have also settled down and did not bash against the boards today, so I guess they are settling down as well.

My sister came to help today, so we finished taking out the old pond, and spent the morning digging out salvageable plants around the area. After lunch we laid out the new pond, then decided to make it another 2' longer. The final result is 9' x 14' plus the head of the river (will be made like a bog and heavily planted, but will have constant water running through it) will be about 20 square feet, so that should help provide more filtration. I have a couple tree roots that need cut out of the way, and the one sprinkler line which needs to be moved, and then its all digging from there...

So here lies the end of my first pond ever... It was a great learning experience, but now everything is going to my sister so she can also enjoy the hobby.

You can see pictures of digging the new pond here. It's hard to see the pear shape in the pics, but this shot shows where the filters will be located (sunk down about a foot), with the waterfall built between them. The board will provide a stable shelf to stack the waterfall bricks on. The river will exit to the middle-right of the view.

And that's where we're at today! I'm working on getting the liner ordered and delivered next week, so unless I run into any major problems, I might be adding water in 2-3 weeks. My koi will be so happy!
