You do know that koi and goldfish are both members of the carp family, right? Yes, goldfish are smaller, but both are poop machines.
I have a pond with goldfish and shibunkins as well. I am aware of both loads. If you do not have Koi, you cannot even being to imagine the difference between the loads. It’s unreal really.
My point is that someone is speaking on something without having them, then saying they don’t have extensive filtration, then saying they have crazy filtration if they wanted koi.

I’m just saying if you keep up with the pond, several people have overloaded ponds and with rocks with success

For those that say you can’t:
This picture shows like 30-32 koi in a 3k gallon pond with rocks. They are all healthy and happy

Lol I could have a load of koi, my filtration is huge. Large bog, technically 7 settling ponds etc.

I prefer plants and goldfish that leave the plants alone.

water always crystal clear, unless I am purging bog plants.

Still recovering from the snake attack, lost around 200 fish.

IDK, but maybe this is a good place to call for a time out on this thread? Just saying…..
All this because people had to judge the person looking for some fish……..
instead of just letting this be a Wanting to home thread.

it is apparent there is a pecking order here and a clique by the amount of people that feel the need to tag other members to beat me up on my comments.
I was hoping this place would be a little less catty

This IS a Garden Pond Forum, BTW. And just to add….the OP was originally posting about having 2 koi that he/she thought were egg-bound….and was looking for a male koi to “help them pass their eggs.” — look back at the first post —

That scenario alone gives rise to a plethora of questions: the first thing coming to mind has to do with fish health…..and fish health issues are usually due to poor water quality…..which is usually due to overstocking and inadequate filtration. I did address that in my answer, but OP chose not to get back with us, so…….

@PM-Performance you should hang around a little longer and read a few more posts before you start jumping on a few words. @addy1 has a 4 foot bog that is well established as well as multiple side ponds and stream. she has experience with pretty much every pond size ,shape and configuration. yes a 20 inch koi is equivalent to a dozen goldfish of 6 inch gold fish.
But i will say this as your pond ages, the fish grow doubling every three years it will not take long before your small pond becomes a death trap waiting to happen. if the power goes out it won't take long to strip the o2 from the water. or if a fish dies the spike will not be able to be handled by the pond. i did recently loose a fish to my own error and the 16 inch fish found his way into the crevasse of the pond but i never saw a spike.

This is due to i also have a large bog, a small bog a bakki shower and a bead filter on 16000 gallons. while we do get our fb fly by's every now and then the regs here do not come up with the crazy statements your referring to. nor is there a pick on click.
you know your self you are over loaded and it may come to bite you. 3000 gallons is a decent size pond and to an experienced ATTENTIVE AND OBSERVENT ponder which you must be,, it can work. however a natural body of water would fail with that kind of bio load. and we hear all they time my pond is 20 years old why all of a sudden are my prize and joy dieing. The answer usually turns out the same you system worked when the fish were smaller and you have reached the maximum.

Thank goodness. I am just having a great laugh that you, of all people, are now part of a "catty" group. I thank god I am not on social media, my head would explode if I was on FB.

I am just stating the difference of opinions vs doing and talking about doing.
I can tell you what my pond is or isn’t to finite detail. I can tell you I have seen ponds 1/3 my size with larger koi that are working as well.
I know my pond is undersized and am already mid excavation of a 3k + gallon expansion. The problem I encountered was not realizing I would have this many fish. It’s a sickness I am sure we can all agree on. lol.

Funny fact: if you go on koiphen they are sooo anti bog there. You go on here and Facebook everyone is all about bogs.
Unfortunately the sources of info are usually from people with new bogs and no one ever answers what they look like years down the line.
Unfortunately that kept me from doing a bog.
Point is, there will always be differing opinions and most of them have little to no real world experience. Mostly internet regurgitation of what they think are facts, hence my post responses.

It’s all good. I’ll stick around for a little since this place seems to be closer to what I am looking for opposed to other forums that insist your collection will die a horrible death unless you have a 4” bottom drain, with rdf’s and bead filters and bare liner ponds ;)

Back in 09 I extensively read monster pond forums. I was more than once told my bog would not work, koi forums, other pond forums, etc

Being a stubborn blonde, I didn't care.
Everybody has their opinion.

My bogs used to be container bogs, whiskey barrels etc.

After reading those forums for quite awhile, I decided to build as they suggested.

Would I do different now? Nope. Except some edge changes minor stuff.
The bog would still be my only filtration. works great.

I am just stating the difference of opinions vs doing and talking about doing.
I was not a fan of face book for 25 years I did not care about someone I went to school with who I have no contact with have their child get a first tooth. Nor did I care about the opinions of covid I have built clean rooms and bio labs in the past enough to know the way we went about it was strictly political. There was very little science to it and imo if you do not protect the eyes it's all a waste of time.
Sorry to go off here the point is . Ponding is no different if your a germaphobe your going to mask up and scream at anyone who doesn't follow your lead.
Sounds familiar. It's just like you said with rdf and bottom drains. Now do I think they have their place yup sure do. I have a mix of filters bog, bakki, and bead. Each has its limits and strengths.
I don't like to fuss with my pond. I have a bead to pull out heavy particles without moving parts.
The bakki does great for growing bacteria in oxygen rich water.
While the bog strips oxygen from the water. Is there anyone system that's perfect ? Not in my opinion. The key to ponding imo is observations don't just look at your fish observe how they are moving interacting and look. That is how I judge how the pond is doing.
The more maintenance you do the more you can bend the rules.
But anyway you slice it get it mastered and there's nothing else you can put in your back yard that is more relaxing imo.
Very from my chair sitting pond side as I'm typing. Thank God the pond is more stable then my typing
