Went into my goldfish pond this morning to pull a large rock, before the possible thunder and rain gets here. Was IN the pond, standing in the middle of the lilies, and stopped to pull a few dead leaves. I had been in that position for maybe a minute when I turned around and saw two bullfrogs sitting on the opposite wall watching me! I was at most 3' from them. The one did jump in after I moved away to the other end to pull up the rock, but the first one stayed put, even when I came back to that end to get out. Can you see the bullfrot across the pond, just to the left of the penny wart? Isn't he/she cute?! ;)

Here is a close up of him/her. Yep, I love my bullfrogs, even though I only have 2 or 3 total in both ponds right now. Appeared to be a young frog in this pond yesterday, seemed to have the stump of a tail, so maybe there are some successful tadpoles that I have never seen that have morphed!

I counted 9 frogs tonight! Wow! 5 of them moved in within the last week. The recent humidity allowed them to travel. Most are young Green Frogs.

Also, my large Bullfrog bit me today! It was sitting in the water so I went to mess with it and touch it's nose. Bit and splashed. Hardly got scared though. it came closer to the edge and sat there. In case anyone was wondering, didn't hurt a bit.

Just a defense mechanism, trying to make that scary human not get so close! No teeth ... kinda like when the goldfish nibble on my legs. They ALWAYS do that when I'm in their pond. Koi ... not so much. They stay on the other end of the pond. Not nearly as trusting as the goldies. I can put my hand in the goldfish pond and they will swim to it immediately, even though I have never fed them by hand. I wanted them to come to the surface for a friend to see them clearer, take a few pics, and it was not morning/feeding time. So, put my hand in the water, here they all came. :)

They will come back, or they probably never left, just laying low. If there is water, they will stick around. I rarely see the leopard frogs around my ponds, but this time of year I see them when I am mowing. They hunt in the grass, so I try to be careful to wait for them to jump out of the way of the mower. Chopped one up once, and felt AWFUL!!! This guy made it to safety and stayed with his head stuck in some dead tall grass. So ... I went into the house to get the camera. When I tried to get a little closer pic

I mow high, like 4 inches, so I don't wipe out a turtle hiding in the grass, toads or frogs or snakes. They sure do like to hide in the grass.

Most of my tadpoles have undergone metamorphosis now whilst for those last few they are just starting. Managed to take some photos the other evening of some little froglets taking their first steps outside of the pond. It's been a joy watching their progression from frogspawn and I look forward to next year now.

Awwwwww ... congrats, Figgy! Did you take the pics at night? I've never gone looking for baby frogs at night, maybe that's why I never see them in the ponds! ;)
Yes, it was late in the evening. I used my torch to spot them then I point my camera in the general direction, press the shutter button and keep fingers crossed that I get a sharp shot.

Yep, I mow high, too, Addy. The one that I hit with the mower jumped while I was over it and didn't know it was there. :( I even stop for baby toads when I spot them. :)
I stop for bees...........praying mantis, frogs anything that moves, I stare at the ground in front of the mower watching for critters.

Cute Figgy! love the small frogs. Great pictures

I saved a bullfrog last night. My Boston Terrier Denali was intent on grabbing something in the grass. Went to see what it was, and it was a bullfrog, her favorite outside "toy". She didn't hurt him, just wanted to play catch with it! It was all blown up with air, I guess to make it look larger. I easily picked it up, and gently put it in the water in the ditch. It blew bubbles, getting rid of the extra air, and swam away. :) Denali just loves the chase, not to kill, just to catch when it comes to bullfrogs that is.
