Agree sissy, insulation etc really helps. Our home in md, could use some more, but our bill is not bad at all usually 150 or so.
Down here bill real cheap even with running the ac at low temp and constantly for us hot blooded northerners.

I like the new roxul rock wool insulation but it is hard to get here .It does not get wet bugs don't like it ,it stays in place and does not loose any R value and also has sound deadening value .Canada has been using it for a long time .

Our insulation is only 12" deep. New code now requires it to be 17" here. Also venting up on roof is all wrong in our house and needs fixing. Black moldy stuff is growing on the wood up in the attic. Nightmare time now

They can take of mold in attics better than they used to .My attic has 3 big roof vents and one of them has a fan in it that pulls air from the other 2 vents and the soffit .Keeps it nice and cool in the summer buy pulling moist hot air out of the attic .It has an automatic thermostat .For 119 dollars best buy I have made .Only works during the summer months .Floor joists are insulated with that membrane holding it up but would love to make it better by pulling that stuff down and putting in roxul

Never leave those big heaters pulled in 24/7, as they draw lots of power, pay no attention to that claim that they "shut off" cause they still draw lots of power! Use "sparingly" and just think, every time it is plugged in the power company's cash registers are going "cha Jing" Cha Jing"!! ....you know, the sound those old cash registers used to make!

When the temps are above Zero Fahrenheit during the day, UNPLUG them all!! Better yet, make all your ponds flow together, and then you would only have to have the one heater! Put the horse trough on top, flowing down to the waterfall, to the koi pond, and then flowing down to the goldfish pond! I use just one heater to heat all three connecting ponds and then one pump from the bottom to the top pond, free flowing back to the bottom pond...

We are getting in contact w/ someone who will know how to correct the venting that is no longer code. Then after venting is up to code and fixed right we will have someone come to clean up the black on the wood. Then we would add the insulation.

I like your idea of running the ponds together like you do Colleen............makes sense to me

I will just stick with my aerator. It does fine in our area, even survived this winter.

Haha, well the horses would not like having top come into my back yard to get a drink of water! Their water trough is in their pasture. But, I could connect the ponds, if I wanted to. So far I've purposely kept them separate so that if I ever have a problem with water, I will have another area to put the fish ... i.e. water line break, and need to move fish to water!
Guy gave me estimate on my roof. He figured for full roof tear off (3 freaking layers of shingles, talk about lazy previous owner!!! never should have more than 2 layers, too heavy for the roof sheating!), and 30 year shingles, plus new aluminum edges. And, talking about roof vents. I have a large roof vent, Sissy, I assume that's what you are talking about. He asked me if it worked. He said nowadays, the brand new ones last MAYBE a year, and have only 1 year warranty. He has been putting in industrial quality ones, cost far more, but work much longer. I think mine is working but will know next summer, I'll listen for it to kick on. But, that's not the problem. There are NO other roof vents. None. The soffit has vented soffit but no vents on top.

That's what mine is and put it in in 2007 .They really help in hot weather and keep humidity out of the attic and keep attic cooler .Had one in my house in NJ also .it is better than those stupid ridge vents they put in .The ridge vents get compressed by the nails in the shingles and do not allow enough air to move out .When I moved into my house in NJ it had ridge vent system and attic was full of mold and had the house new roof put on ridge vent taken out and the roof vent put in and had to go up spray all the mold and remove all the insulation and put in new insulation and had to buy all the safety stuff to protect me from it .

Well, I'm not positive the big roof vent is still working, but I think it is. I can sure understand how they would work far better than ridge vents, Sissy. BUT, if they fail, then there is no way for the air to dissipate, right? I have soffitt vents, but the air can only go one way, so they don't help without another area for the air to go out up at the top.
Neighbor that has steel metal roofing/siding company (that did my big barn 2 years ago) came last night to give me an estimate to put metal on instead of 30 year shingles. Agent from STate Farm is assigning my case to local inspector, so we shall see what he says. Neighbor said even though shingles are not pulled up on the back side, they look awful. I sure hope State Farm agrees to replace the whole roof, as I am NOT going to do half job now. I'm praying the metal won't be much more than the shingles. Hoping he gives me some of a break. :) Insurance already said they won't replace it with metal, or replace metal if damaged. How stupid is that? Metal lasts far longer, but I guess it causes more problems in hail or when large trees around. It's like an insurance company not paying for a vasectomy, but getting mad because wife has had 6 kids in 8 years. :)

The reason some companies do not replace metal is that it can be peeled up and also damaged extensively by hail ,more than even shingles ,plus with metal roof homeowners are required here to put up snow dogs at the end of the roof because of injuries from snow slides off the roof and then insurance company uses that as another excuse why they don't want to insure them , Metal roof is known to be peeled up by high winds more than shingles and are lightening magnets .They use every excuse not to insure them ..They expense makes lots of companies put a clause that they will not cover metal roof or metal siding .They are some companies that cover metal here like farm bureau insurance .I have a neighbor not far from me with a clay tile roof (why tile I don't know ) Now they cannot sell the house because people ask about the roof .It is a big house also almost 5 thousand sq.ft.

Good grief there is always so much to do to keep up with when it comes to houses. I need a new roof soon, the wood shingles are getting really old and soon I will have to have a new roof too! Not doing that myself cause I would be scared to climb up on my steep roof! Old house needs much work here too, but someday I just might get it all done, but not going to worry about that now cause it is going to be Extremely cold tonight with the wind outside howling and cool drafts are leaking in under the door right now! Got the the red heater out for tonight, going to be keeping a close ice on pond in the next 24 hours to make sure everything still running smoothly....
