Thanks, again, Addy. For some reason I thought the "ridge" had to do with those boney hips sticking out on the frogs. So, I took some more pics tonight, but by your description and pics, I think these are all bullfrogs. I don't see any ridges going from the ear down their backs. Now, can I possibly remember for one year, and not ask again next year? BTW, I did look it up, but still could not tell the definite difference. Geesh ...

And, I saw a painted turtle tonight. Not sure how large he is, but looks pretty small, maybe 4" diameter. So far, only showing the tip of his nose, and spooks easily. This one has not been here before, I suspect.

Haha, yeah, painted turtles are swimmers. As long as I don't get any snappers in the ponds, I'm thrilled to have the painted babies. I'm sure they will feast on tadpoles and fish babies, but that's ok. Survival of the fittest. Saw the turtles yesterday and he is about 4" long/round. Cute little bugger. I was standing feeding goldfish, all of a sudden he came swimming out to the open! He didn't see me at first, came up, looked right at me, I was a statue, he moved to find food I was tossing for them - bread pieces. Then I made the mistake of moving when he was ready to pop his head above the water again, and he spotted the movement and back under he went. I did get him to realize I had fish food, too, and tossed some his way, in between the lily pads, and he happily munched on that and some bread he found. So, if he stays, he will soon figure out when the food is arriving. :blueflower: :claphands:

Here are a few pics of the turtle this morning. When he hears the "plop" of the food on the water, I always know to watch the lilies, as when he scrambles around them, they really move! Then, whenever the lilies stop moving, he will pop his head up in between the pads. He was a riot watching this morning, as I was tossing bread and food on top of the pads for him to climb on and get. Problem was that the koi also smelled it on the pads, and were intent on getting the food as well! Got some cute videos, but no time to download them this morning. Here are the few pics I got.

To give you an idea of his size, that is a Water Fringe pad in front of him, and lily pads above and below him. His shell is about 4" front to back.

Water fringe is beginning to bloom!

And, this is the plant that I got in the box of stuff from you, Addy. I think it's also an aquarium plant, and maybe same stuff Colleen has in her ponds. Anyone know what it is? Does it need to be under water?

Well knowing what I sent you, everything came from the bog. Where I pulled the 4getmenot was around 3 inches of water, so yep under water.

I ordered it last year, put in my deck pond and it disappeared, thought it all died. Trying to recall the name of it.
humm or is it what jw sent me

Anacharis I have some in my preforms, stream pond and now it looks like the bog, the fish will eat it up. I grow it away from the fish then toss some in for them to eat.

I didn't think water fringe would survive the winters. That is a pretty flower.

Yep CE that Anacharis needs to be underwater and the fish will gobble it up like crazy. Love that little turtle and how does that water fringe grow, like regular water lilies or just free floating?

I must send you both some water fringe, JW and Addy!!! It is such a cool plant, got some of it last year, took a while to establish itself last year, but this spring, coming up everywhere. Not really invasive, spreading out of control, but I had some in the stream and some in pots in the pond, and some in the bog. All of it has grown, it seems to like it the most in the stream, so more shallow water. It grows up to the edge of the stream, but not really over into the ground. It does go over the waterfall into the pond, that's where the pic was taken. Not sure if that's from the stream, or from the pot, and it grow over there. But, it DOES survive the winter. It has much smaller leaf pads than most lilies, they are about 3-4" across, and the flower is about 1.5" diameter. It has that really cute "fringe" on the edge of the flower petals that makes it stand out! Stands up out of the water to bloom, too.

I think you are no lower a number of zone than me, Addy, and I'm certain it would love your climate, JW. OK, so I looked it up and sure enough it says 7 or 8!!! Well, that sure can't be correct, because I'm in zone 6. I think you are, too, Addy, aren't you? JW, looks like you would be Zone 8, so it should do fine by you, too. It spreads by runners, just keeps expanding. The stuff in the stream completely froze at one point, so I know it can handle the freeze and thaw. We did have a mild winter, but I think it can go underwater for the winter if necessary, and would do fine that way, too. Let me know if you're interested in some. Be happy to share. :blueflower:

HTH, you're correct! It has lots of names, I noticed. When I searched "water fringe water plant" it also named "floating heart" as a name.
Great, Addy, now I can "pay you back" for the plants you sent me! I just went out after the shower, and there is a LOT of it in the stream. It's all making runners and spreading. I like it in there, like mini lilies. Not much blooming yet, but like the green, too.

CE, I am enjoying my frogs so much I was thinking of getting a turtle also for my watergarden. Are there any disadvantages to keeping them with goldfish?
