The one guy likes his pic taken the other not so much, I think the flash startles them a bit. They were here by 8:30 tonight looking for any grapes that may be left. They are so funny to watch climb on the arbor, upside down hanging onto grape vines. When I go out there they stop what they are doing and find each other to hang out while I take their pic.

Agree, Addy. I'm sorry, T'Man, but I will never tire of seeing the pictures of these babies! Keep 'em coming! They remind me of the 2 I raised, Jethro and Ellie Mae. :) Ellie was very independent and playful, Jethro was more shy. I hope they keep coming for a while yet! Maybe you will have to feed them if the grapes run out. LOL

Forever is a long time, they can stay for a few more months but I am concerned that once they see the fish they will start going after them. Seeing how this is a pond forum I am not sure they would make good mascots, maybe I could change my avatar to one of them.

Yeppers, I third that idea. What do ya think, Tmann??? Maybe you could let them have a room in your house for the winter to hibernate in, keep them safe, huh? :)
I do have 3 extra bedrooms in our house however I don't think the dog (Grace) would be too keen on this idea. She watches them like a hawk when they come at night, you can't get her attention when they are there.

I will keep the pics coming as long as they show up. I am hoping that I can get some pics of them somewhere besides the arbor.

And the problem with raccoons is that they are extrememly good at problem solving and with those nimble fingers they can get into most anything. So even if you cover your pond and lock it down they will find a way in. You may have to end up live trapping them and moving them another place.

You're absolutely right, Nova. I've heard that racoons only fish in the shallows, though. Is that correct? If so, then you may be safe with your fish, as long as they can't sit in a shallow area to "fish". I think they mainly eat stuff that is caught in the shallows, like in streams and creeks. I don't think they will be able to catch your big fish, assuming they go to the bottom at night like most fish do. Good luck! At least for now they are not a threat, but Nova is right, if they become a threat, the deal is off, and they will have to move.

I have a raccoon that has been spending the night in my maple tree for the last couple of nights. My hubby thought I was joking when I told him a coon just went up the tree until got the flashlight an showed him. He is not afraid at all. They are a relative of the bear family and will hiss at you like a cat if they get mad. This is the time of year they come looking for food to eat before winter hits. He came down and went to the back part of the pond where the rocks are unstable. The rocks moved and scared the heck out of him and he went back up the tree. A couple of months ago all of our plants were nocked off the edge of the pond and we had to fish them out and I figured it was a raccoon. They do like water and can swim. Just can't dive for the fish so if they stay at the bottom they are ok. My pond is 3.5 foot deep. So far they are ok. They may be cute but they can really tear things up and can be mean. If you feed them they will stay. I hope mine is not looking for a new home for his family. I don't let my dog out by himself at night. My friends cat got killed by a raccoon. The raccoons in our area carry rabies, distemper and a ring worm in their feces. Make sure your pets vaccinations are up to date.

So we are eating dinner around 7 tonight and my wife says the cat is back in the yard on the hill by the waterfall, I look and can't see him. Then she says that wasn't a cat it was the raccoon as I look he is climbing up the arbor post. He wanders around the arbor going from one end to the other then stops in the middle, it is hard to see him from our back door unless you lay on the floor and look up. After I eat I go outside to see if his brother came with him and to see what he is up to, as I go out to look for him he is in the same spot in the middle of the arbor. I watch form him to move so I can get a good pic of him, but he doesn't move, I get closer and then realize the little guy is sleeping, balancing himself on some grape vines. Anyway here is a pic not much of one but none the less it is him. I think his fur is getting a lighter brownish color.

Awwww .... he's so cute, and to think he feels so comfy and at home to nap on your arbor. My son was leaving my house last night, and spotted a fox pup in the road ditch hunting. Said he stopped with truck headlights on him for a long time, didn't seem to bother the pup, kept on hunting. Was more than half grown, on his own, so probably pretty hungry! I don't want them coming and killing any of my cats in the barn, but I think it would be fun if they came closer so I could watch them grow up. But, I'm probably just asking for trouble, so I don't coax them closer. I see the adults pretty often in the spring and fall, though, just usually running across the road. Enjoy your babies!

Last night after the one showed up early evening to take a nap, the other one showed up around 10. They started playing with each other so I thought I would get my camera and try to shoot a video, it is not that great and they are hard to see. I need to get a brighter flashlight so my camera can pick them up better. Enjoy.
