The pads start out under water and grow to water ever I have some that have stems on the that have grown from one side of the pond to the other .So the pot should be all the way under the water .The pads will adjust themselves

pretty fast and they should be lowered way below frozen water level because roots could freeze .The leaves will die back and it will be safe as long as the water does not freeze to where it;s sitting .If your worried you bring it in and put it in a tub of water ,but you should think about a deicer

As sissy says, as long as the tuber does not freeze the lily will survive the winter. I put mine from 2 feet to 3 feet down, every one of them came back in the spring.

When it starts dieing back in the fall cut off the leaves and flowers so they don't rot on the bottom, then put the plant in the lowest part of your pond. Mine froze down to 8 inches so for me, technically anything below a foot would work, as long as my pond did not freeze deeper.

I hope you put a piece of spare liner under each stone if your going to be stepping on them .I saw something like that before and they talked about how they put a piece of extra liner under each rock so they would not hurt the original liner
