that dead tree is a really hot spot :O

Awesome pic!
I had a neighbors nephew cut the maple after it died.

I told him to leave all the trunks at that level, the hawks, herons, now vultures love it as a landing spot. One trunk rotted and fell over the fence, it had a split trunk. So far still sitting on the fence, big trunk need a good chain saw to chop it up.

We had to cut a big Pine tree down a few years ago due to it leaning way over and breaking off due to snow and I thought it would make a neat something. Decided to put a bird bath on top. Hubby carved out a bowl in the center of the trunk on top and it fits perfect. Put a round flat heavy paver in the bath to keep it sturdy. I bet there are lots of things you can do w/dead trees. The birds love it!

Wet and cold out there so doing purging boxing up stuff to dump. Feels good as you get to see empty spaces.

Hiding from the cold a warm 11 chill index 1

I did flir pictures of the bee hives first thing this am. They are hanging in there, the warm warm Oct-Dec had them flying when they should not have been which equals coming home and eating up their stores. Almost all of the hives have the cluster in the top box which equals out of food. I have put 5, 3plus lb sugar blocks on each hive. They eat up each block in a week or so, need to check the next time it is a bit warmer, ie above 32 or sooner if we don't warm up. Add more sugar blocks, OW the hives will starve to death.

This hive is big and strong, bees in the top box, strong heat signature.

This hive the bees have a cluster , tight, in the top box, less heat then the big hive
FLIR_20220121_070859.jpg

This hive the cluster heat signature is above the top box, in other words they are clustering right below the sugar block I put in. They are in a bit of trouble. Hope they survive.

You can see the blue bottom boxes, zero heat.

that's pretty cool! I think you've talked re the FLIR cams, but how about another synopsis? Be interesting for me and any new folks wandering by!

Have you ever done some sort of cost analysis re bee keeping? Sure seems you do a heck of a lot of work for them. I think; how are they surviving where addy ISN'T living???

And I do a lot of hobby/maintenance things around here but bee keeping sure seems like a lot of that would be taken up with bee stuff! I thought I might like to try this but having been stung (via my job) every year for a couple decades makes me remember why I'd rather not! Still, the whole idea is super interesting and full of learning opps!

again, that's so cool to see/think about. Can your FLIR cam get heat signatures through houses? Could be kind of a creepy thing to think about if you're paranoid or something cool if you're an Intel agency keeping the borders safe!

Have you tried it out on other things? I know with fish being cold blooded, it would be useless there. I was thinking if you take a hike around your lot, would it show stuff like foxes hibernating? Bears, bobcats, etc? I would imagine they'd stay in their den if you walked by in the daytime and you could locate such if needed...just thinking out loud...don't worry, there's an 'off' switch!

WELL the long and short of it, if you count the hours, the equipment, the treatments, the sugar, the bottles to bottle the honey, time at the market to sell, etc etc We are losing money all of the time.

The only time you do well with bees, sell packages, sell nucs, sell queens. Or have a ton of hives, pay for help get good return on your honey sales and rent out your hives for pollination to farms, nurseries, etc.

Well they are neat little bugs, run a great society in the hive, each bee knows what its job is, and the job changes as they age. Very interesting. A lot of learning to keep them healthy and alive.

Equipment, our walkout basement, 1/2 of it is bee stuff, and a van outside has bee stuff and piles of bee stuff under the deck.

And bee stuff in one of the upstairs rooms and one of the small rooms in the basement (boxes of honey bottles, buckets etc)

Bags of sugar stored etc etc.
