I went out to check on my pond breather, and I was also curious what -50° wind chills felt like. It really feels about the exact same as 0°F, other than the damage it can do in a very short amount of time.
I do feel bad for wildlife, though. Even though they can handle colder temperatures, this is going to take a toll on them.

Keep in mind that wind chill is only applicable to mammals that have sweat glands that expel water.
As far as I know, only humans and pigs have that characteristic. Dogs, for example have sweat glands but excrete oil, which are not as susceptible to our wind chill values.

The coldest I've measured here is -40 with a -52 windchill.
It didn't last long, but I always think about how our pioneers managed in this kind of weather.
I guess that's why people didn't live much past 40 years old back then.
Just saw on news that coldest was Antarctica -89 c so in comparison to that we are nearly tropical. Although the news said if you breathed the air at that point you would die.
I don't recall what our worst has been but, it was -52 going to office today with wind chill and you sure hear your car make strange sounds and tires are like cement.
I would have made a lousy pioneer and would not have wanted to go longer than early 20's.

Reminded me I usually put out few bags of corn for the deer and rabbits. I feel bad now.

Wind chill is applicable to many mammals, unfortunately farm animals often feel the effects of wind chill more than animals in the wild as they may lack adequate shelter,or have no access to a natural wind barrier, conditions for these animals all depend on the farmer. When an animal has wet fur due to rain or snow that has melted, the thermal air layer provided by fur trapping warm air from their body is compromised, this means the animals body has to work a lot harder to regulate its temperature and the wind chill does make it harder on the animal. When temperatures take a plunge and the wind chill is low young animals can become susceptible to more illnesses, or can sometimes die. Sheep are normally the ones to fair better as their wool is waterproof. I think dogs and other animals have a sweat gland on their nose that expels water just like a human sweat gland, and pigs have sweat glands like other animals that have fur only the fur has been bred out of domesticated pigs, this may or may not be true I'm just not sure. Also every year some poor opossum living somewhere cold loses a bit of its tail to frostbite, it's very sad.

We made it all the way up to -10°F today. Back down again tonight with windchills just as cold as last night and this morning. The news said Milwaukee schools have had an entire week off because of the weather.

Be safe addy and hope the flight goes well
We got out of there right before the snow bomb, The captain announced bad winds coming, we were moving a bit before the flight time, but got in a line for de icing of the wings. Took off around 40 minutes later, without issue, a bit bumpy, but I am here and typing so we got here safe. Long day, started at 3am finally got to our place at 630pm.

-11 here in the D.
Busy at the bird feeder and squirrel feeder, but by noon everyone is gone. I put extra food out today. Last night had to be brutal to sleep out side. It’s so cold the birdbath is steaming like a hot tub.
