As the ice mass in the arctic decreases, the jet stream becomes more unstable so our weather patterns in the northern hemisphere will swing more.
Cold air is above the jet stream, warm air is below the jet stream.

Here's an animated forecast map for North America that shows our short-term cold/warm weather:

Here's the map for the UK:

The small blue arrows on the map indicate wind direction

We had high winds yesterday and graupel falling from the sky - it's not hail, it's not sleet, it's... graupel! We went from mild and sunny to gusting winds and downright cold in about 30 seconds. At one point we looked out the window and it could have been a January blizzard. I guess winter is coming, ready or not!

According to your map @MitchM rain is heading our way soon!
Can you find another map that says only sunshine on the way?

Went out for a hike today, nice for the most part but it was windy, and it had a nasty chill to it.

Dipped into the 20s last night, will climb into the low 50s later. Weather forecast says it's a cold front from Canada.

Overcast for the day, high 40s mid afternoon if lucky. Have not seen much sun or dry weather this fall.

It's in the 30s right now, meant to climb into mid 40's. Some sun, hopefully no rain today. Lot of leaves down overnight from wind and rain.
