At one time, it could have been either. I fostered a wild mouse alongside a fancy mouse. They lived happily as cagemates for two years, although I was warned that it was like putting a wolf with a dog.

I did not see the "er" connection, but I sort of saw a connection among the four root words. However since it was the last grouping, I was not worried.
