Not with a underlay between it and the pond. Carpet pad cardboard, something. I use the hardware cloth on a lot of my bee stuff it stands up pretty good to water. I have some in a pond to help make a save the land turtle climb out shelf. Been there for years now.
It’s nasty to work with though…I almost always manage to get cut working with it.

chipmonks at my house in NJ would always get into my veggie garden and my birdbaths . They would just make a real mess playing in the water in the summer . The water would be so dirty it was horrible . So I had to build them a shallow water holding pond and even that did not keep them out of my big water fountain bird bath . They would teal from the veggie garden and wash off their bounty . I would even catch them washing off flowers . Cute but in the summer hot months they were a pain . I have never seen one here . Don't even see cute rats here either

I love chipmunks and miss them too…none down here. I have a lot of squirrels and they will take peanuts from my hand. I am sure that there are a lot of rats being Florida but I have yet to see one. Had them as pets growing up. They are smart and affectionate.

The only size that does not allow the bees through. We use for queen cages, screened hive covers etc.

@addy1 - thank you for that information and photo! Is it more flexible and easier to work with? I have used the "regular" hardware cloth for different things and it is awful. I couldn't imagine trying to line an excavation with it but this might be doable!

I can make small bee cages without issue. Wear gloves the cut ends are sharp lil pieces of wire. The queen cage is 3x2 x1/4inch The wire folds nicely.

Soooooo - I just called a local manufacturer of hardware cloth/metal screen/etc. Talked with a super nice young man who was trying to help me find options, prices, amounts.
A 4' x 100' roll of #8 mesh (not stainless) is $727.00.
Arrrgggghhh!
I have to decide if I want to postpone the pond for another year so I can save up to buy this.
Or do I put in another layer of heavy duty underlayment to discourage the chipmunks? (So far, knock on wood, they haven't chewed anywhere in the front yard pond and I know they live in the hill with the waterfall filter.

you could always put in a concrete base, then line the sides of the pond 12" below grade with the hardware cloth to discourage initial digging of tunnels. You wouldn't need much base and even if it cracked, you still have the liner above. If you put mesh in your concrete base, that would even keep it from floating when it does crack; you're only trying to keep the lil varmints away from the liner. Too, I'd believe sand as a bottom base might work too as if they dig, sand should not keep its shape for tunnels. I have chipmunks that have somehow found a hole under my walls; they come in looking for any cherry pit seeds I've thrown into the landscape around the pond. Have had no issue re pond, even if I do have tunnels in the gardens now! I bet lining with old carpet would probably dissuade any tunneling, too.

Just thinking out loud...

I wonder if a layer of gravel and driveway base would stop them that should only run you a 150 bucks . that and moth FLAKES have been known to keep varmints out of areas
