I can't compete with the gorgeous photography on this page! Every time I try to get a picture of my fish I just see the glare off the water. That and the only frog we have this summer won't let me get close enough for a photo.

Unfortunately I went out to the pond this morning and our new koi was missing. I know it's going to happen from time to time but it's the first time it's happened to us. This is why I told my wife we needed a bigger pond - if we could have so many fish that we couldn't name them we wouldn't get so attached!

So sorry to hear that...

Generally speaking, shoot facing north, or away from the sun. I occasionally use a polarizing filter for my camera which removes the glare, but if you search around your pond for the right angle, you should have some decent luck in minimizing the harshest glare.

I'm sorry about your fish. :( It's definitely never easy to lose one, which is why there's an "unspoken rule" in ponding - NEVER name your fish - those are always the first to go. (Now, naturally, all my fish have names because, well, because that way we know who we're mourning when one disappears. Besides, how else are you going to call them over to you if they don't have names?? LOL)

And a really good telephoto lens helps a LOT when it comes to pictures of frogs & other critters.

I was sitting out by the pond last night.

Today, my first waterlily bloomed.

A lot of species outside of the pond are blooming, too.

Here's the rain garden.

Also, last night, I watched a bat fly by and something caught my eye. If you look back at the first photo, you'll be able to see this. This Great Horned Owl was there the entire time and I hadn't realized it.

They nest in the nearby woods. I hear them often, but only see them every once in a while. Third time this year!
