Should I replace my cyclone/barrel style filter with something else or just remove it entirely?

I think it's just turbulence from the way I cut one or more of the slots. Or the up flow interacting with the down flow from the waterfall. There are a couple cool looking eddies

Perhaps the flow to the bog is too rapid. I split the line from my pump to the bog/waterfall so I could control the flow with something similar to this:

and then it feeds this:

Just some ideas to consider.

After reading a bit about the traditional bog setup (pumped piped to bottom of the bog, etc), my current configuration won't quote work. But now I'm wondering how necessary the pipe setup is. Presumably it's so the water filters upward through the pea gravel.

i may try a variation of this concept by just adding pea gravel and plants to my upper pond.

Ya, that doesn’t really work. I tried that the first time around. I reasoned there would be at least some cycling of the water.. I had my waterfall falling into the bog behind some flag stone hoping it would enter the bog at the back and filter through to the front where it overflowed into the pond. It worked for about 5 minutes until the water reached the top of the gravel and then all the water would just flow across the top and straight into the pond without much filtration happening. I got a leak somewhere eventually in the bog so when I dug it up to put new liner in, I used the opportunity to add the plumbing for an upflow system. Much better results. (Except I still have the damn leak!!! )

I think there are probably some setups where it *could* work, but definitely wasn't going to happen with my geometry and flow pattern so I ended up adding the pipes/upflow stuff.
