My temps drop just low enougn to get 4" of snow a year. That usally happens once a year. Also my pond temps are right around 55 degrees which is also warming the plastic. Here are places of people I communcate with that use 6 mil poly and I only listed places colder than western Oregon. IN,Colorado, Eastern Ontario, TN, Norway, Montreal Canada, Scranton PA. and Lake George, NY

Hey DoDad, do you know a lot of people in Norway? I have family there and have been many times, I am a dual citizen.

DoDad,

As I make plans for over-wintering my fish here in Michigan, I look for your advice. I plan on leaving my fish in the pond outside and was wondering what temperature I should shoot for, I was thinking in the 34-36 degree range, enough to slow the fish's metabolism way done but just enough to prevent freezing. I suspect the pond will freeze over and plan on keeping a hole open with floating heater and an airstone in the pond. When I built the pond I installed some experimental heating below the liner. As to how they will work I don't yet know. What they are is some coiled heat trace inserted into 1 inch pvc (8 foot sections) and each end capped and filled with sand. Each draws 13w and I place 8 of them underneath about 16" apart in parallel. To this I plan on making my own control unit.

While I was doing my research for making my pond, I came across a DIY pond heater. I can't find the site, but basically it was a dome formed by pvc pipe, covered in plastic and a 30 watt light bulb hung at the center top. It had foam pipe insulation around the base to help it stay afloat. It probably would work better if covered with bubble wrap or pool solar cover for more insulation value. It was used in addition to an aerator in the pond. Sounded feasible and a lot less wattage than a regular pond heater.
