pond in progress started 4/21/10

Hi Addy how did you make the planters, if that is what they are? I love this idea for the lilies but don't know if it will take up to much room in my 1000 gal.

I have 5 lilies in my 1000 gallon stock tank, they are all doing quite well. I have around 12 in the big pond and one or two in the small preforms.

well when I was looking thru your build thread I noticed them setting around the work site. They didn't have plants in them just setting here and there. I assumed they were planters that where made to set in the rocks and look like a rock. Looks like a bag of cement with a hole in center for plant to fit in.

Aww got it those are carved out rocks from Mexico, heavy suckers, made into planters. My late hubby bought them. I hauled them across county from Arizona to Maryland when I moved. Now all lining the steam with plants in them.

Thank you, guess I need to do an up date some time. Been darn busy since honey retired.

After my husband passed, I left my pond in Arizona to move to Maryland to marry one wonderful guy.

We have a great wooded / grass lot, but very sloped, hard to mow. A ton of shale just inches below what little dirt we have, which is also maryland clay. It is hard to even dig a hole for a plant. My honey watched and helped me dig holes to attempt to put in plants. He decided this ex workaholic / early retired new wife needed something to keep busy with and out of trouble.

So! For our first anniversary pressie he bought me a kubota. Needless to say I have been digging every since.

The utility trench was dug on 4/21, two months later slowly getting there.

Here are some of the beginning shots. The yard before being attacked by the tractor, and of course the planning drawing. The dotted line is the utility trench.

More progress to come and of course photos.

Love the anniversary gift. I asked for a backhoe and got a landscaper instead. I also have a Maryland clay bottom 26,000 gallon pond. It was recommended that I build a bog filter instead of trying the usual UV and mechanical means to rid myself of the green water. See my post. Thanks for posting. I am going to read all about your progress.

Neat! Ours would not hold water, too much shale. Part of the pond is against a rock wall ran into it when i was digging.

I wondered why you put a liner in it. My big problem is murky water in the pond but not seen in the sample i take.

We have some clay, but mainly dirt with rocks or rocks with dirt. To even dig in a plant you need a pick

Crownsville. Near Annapolis. and you are where? Our last house was a sand pit and this soil is layered but primarily clay. I know what it's like to try to dig a hole. I could sell my soil to sculptors.
