My bog was hard to place since the pond was already fenced in for the daycare. Imagine a large triangle with the far corner returning to the pond. I'm also running my skippy as well. The area where the bog is runs dh from the pond so I had to put a rubber coupling there so I could drain the lines for winter. My pipe that runs in the bog was about 6ft long. I forgot to get a pipe cap for the pvc so I just heated the pipe on my grill and smashed the end flat once it was warm. Just need bog plants now.

I went over to a friends house last night and was getting some plants from her bog. She paid a professional $20k to come build her pond and bog but I noticed something different about her bog. It's 4 ft deep, has the plastic crates that take up space so there isn't as Mich rock, the rock layer is 6" thick and then there is 2" of water on the top. That really would do much for the filtration of a bog would it?

It will still help filter, just a lot less substrate to go through. The crates, my guess, is to keep the gravel off the bottom to flush the system, one thing I don't do.

The water would act as a settlement chamber in a way. Did she have a drain in the bog? Interesting idea, if I did something of that sort I would make the gravel layer deeper. My mini bogs on one of my small first ponds, had a plastic grid below the pea gravel with a bottom drain. I would back flush them. They were pretty small, but the ponds were small too lol

Not sure about a drain but there is a clean out pipe. Every spring she does a complete drain down and power washes everything. Takes all the fish out and thins the heard each spring.

wow! I sure don't want to do that............my herd will eventually thin it's self, we have had 6-7 spawnings this year, still have not seen a fry. Lots of tads oh and some rosey red fry, but no goldie fry yet.

Here is what we did to connect the ponds

A t off the flow into the bog from the big pond

DSC03552.jpg

pl roofing goop sealed piece of pvc for the water connection between the lotus pond and the second preform. The first smaller preform water falls into the lotus tub, filled via the garden hose, the lotus tub goes into the second preform via the 1 inch pvc, we added a second piece of pvc in case the one would get clogged.

Have my bridge stone over the connection, so can't really see it. Put a piece of liner below the preform lip, (like a lower edge) used the pl goop to seal the two together, have the liner just draped into the pond, a slight drop. We ended up with a mini stream from the ponds into the big pond.

will post more as I dress it up

Your preforms are blending in nicely and look natural now and all your blooming beauties are so pretty. Can't believe you got the 50cent lilies to come back. Guess they are hardier then I thought!

I am tickled, we are getting some good rains, no mud flowing into the pond, the sloping I made around the new preforms is working great. I was a little concerned, the largest preform is below grade, had to cut away an established bank, for the upper edge, because of our slope, exposing dirt to rain again. Thought I might look out and see a mud river going into the big pond, but nope nice and clear! yippee!

lol we posted at the same time jw,

We had a mild winter, not sure if they are rated for a cold one. If not oh well they were pretty this year. They were pretty cheap to try them out.

Great addy you getting the rain and the ponds are working right to not let the dirt in there!
I will have to try those lilies here if they go on sale cuz our weather is pretty mild here.
