The ag report was on a paper posted at the store and I should have looked at the name of it and didn't .The store was southern state .I did google peat and ponds and there are a few things on there .What I can see there must be a compressed form of it in pellets just like barley pellets and peat also comes in a large bag ,I'm guessing all these by the stories are big ponds or farm ponds .They also have liquid peat just like they have liquid barley

I saw an article similar on dr foster and smith pet education.com that has a pdf file and explains a lot about peat in ponds and it says you can add it to your bio filter and will give the pond a yellow tint but to take that away it says use activated carbon www.peteducation.com

Some people use peat as a part of the substrate in planted aquariums and they say it will tint the water.

OK, so you use peat to tint the water to discourage algae, and then use activated carbon to remove the tint.... anyone else get the irony here??? John

The peat is supposed to get rid of algae like barley and you can have the tint or not have the tint .I saw that some use both barley and peat .Peat by what I read gets rid of string algae and helps ph .But there are like 6 different opinions of what peat does and does not due so it's confusing .

At the beginning of the season I use barley extract, it does tint the water ever so slightly but is really unnoticeable to the untrained eye. It does help with my spring start up and algae.

I use the barley extract also but I use one of the whole house water filter with a carbon filter in it .It is the one my son took out of this house to put in the self cleaning system .I also have used micro lift spring and autumn start up .It smells like rotten eggs but always keep the pond from shock ,from extreme weather changes .

You're planting a garden now sissy? Will it grow in the cold weather? I know lettuce might but did not know about potatoes, broccoli or cukes.

I have it in a sunken green house and it is in the ground by 2 feet and surrounded with mulch .That keeps it warm enough to grow veggies all winter .It is built out of concrete block standing on it's edge with an inside wall of block and there is mulch between the 2 walls .On top I have the wooden frame with a giant door on top made of storm windows on hinges .I grow better veggies in the winter here .
