Have just found out that the water coming out of the main pond to the big filter runs through a uv unit in the garage, do i leave this as it is ?
ok i will get the crate and fiber fill this week and i will have a closer look at getting this bio filter started even though i havent got a clue how to do it, but we all have to start somewhere ?
do i fill the basket to the top, with fiber fill ?

why not fill it you may have to change it every day for a while, thats why i say get enough to fill it a few times. when you change it.rinse out what you take out and let it dry so its fluffy again it wont look real good but if it traps the crap..thats all that counts. can you take a pic of the inside of the upper pool? or draw how its set up? or better yet if the u.v is in the garage maybe you could just build your bio filter there! the hoses are already ran to it..a out door plastic trash can would do. then fill the upper pool with plants.

It was this dirty just after ten minutes, it going to take awhile by the looks of it , in the top pool there is no set up, i am running the pump hose over the edrge of the top, it doesnt have a set up.
Think im going to turn it into a skippy filter, and put plants in it.

thanks for all the help.

Thats a good start ...
You can take a fine net and move slow and scoop up a lot of the muck.

I do this to help clear solids that are floating about once a month. It works great and is easy to set up and tear down.

Hi,
the water should first hit the brushes and in order flow thru the corsest media to the finest, out of order causes premature clogging. i would put as much media in the filter as i could without packing too tight. home depot sells a good plastic cut to fit furnace filter. they are 20"x 25"x1" good for first layers.
you'll see a marked improvement. hopefully you dont have rocks across the bottom.

Gardenplanters,

in the large filter that goes direct into the large pond, the filter is set up as so,
it enters in the back via a uv light.
first course to hit is a fine gravel course on top, then a foam filter in the middle and then finally the large pebbles at the bottom and lastly it hit the brushes before coming out of the front. is this set up wrong and is that why the filter is getting clogged do easily ?
I only cleaned it out on Saturday and by sunday it had stopped filtering and was completely clogged ?
i could take some photos of the filter set up.

Hi,
Its going to take a little time to turn the pond around
net out what you can like Koiguy told you
If you have a extra pump you can put a laundry basket up on blocks or some thing, in the pond, keep it above the water , put in the pillow stuffing, and let the water flow thru, it will speed things up.
